My computer refuses to come out of an s3(suspend to ram) standby, when i press the power button to wake the computer up the computer comes on again but then it does nothing, the only thing strange i noticed was the dvd-writer light flashing irratically, the only way i can get the computer the start again is from a cold boot, the reset button doesnt reset the computer! my computer is heavily overclocked, but this shouldnt be the cause of this, i think!

    Spec:
    p4 2.8 prescott @ 3.56ghz
    2 x 512 pc 3200 ram,
    2 x maxtor 160 in raid 0
    asus p4c800-e deluxe
    MSI fx5900XT 128(lightly overclocked)
    custom watercooling kit.
    thermaltake butterfly 480w

    Any suggestions?

    Disable all power management functions.

Its one of those things that they just haven't got working yet, but they released it anyway.

    In windows.
The Bios (generally) knows what its doing.

With my computer (laptop), pressing buttons on the keyboard or wiggling the mouse will get it out of suspend mode, the power button is only used to get it out of hibernate.

Have you tried updating your motherboards BIOS to the latest release?

I think your thinking of maybe suspend s1 which basically turns off the monitor and hard disks, s3 turns the computer totaly off, except the ram. anyway, wiggling the mouse wont take a computer out of an s3 standby

    kippy: yes

No, suspend on a laptop is generally S3, just the RAM. Doesn't always come out of it, and takes long enough that it's definately not just turning off the video and disk!

There is also an option in my Shuttle's (desktop) BIOS to wake from keyboard activity.

hm...well my s3 does defo turn off the hard disk because my water cooling system also turns off and its powered by the same molex connectors the hard drives are, there might be different specifications for a laptop than a desktop! anyway, any suggestions as why it wouldn't be coming out of S3 standby? it does try to come out of standby and the power button is a valid way to wake a computer out of S3

As you say S3 shuts everything down except the RAM, that is to be expected.

What the power button does depends on how it is configured; modern power buttons are 'soft' and can actually be configured to do whatever you like, e.g. on my laptop the power button is configured to shut down Windows, while on my desktop the power button hibernates. If I press the power button on my laptop when it is suspended, it will wake up and then shut down Windows.

Have you looked at the power settings in the BIOS? Certainly my Shuttle has gobs of stuff in there as to all sorts of alternative ways of coming out of S3 (trying and failing to get wake on LAN working myself.)
