You don't need a live account if you're only playing head-to-head.
Just your crossover cable to link the two Xboxes.

The consoles are then connected to a TV each.

    edited to say

At least I think it's a crossover you need, and not just an straight ethernet cable...

    cool,
    cheers for the help.

must get me one of those in a few weeks when i go back to college

Yup it's def a crossover cable. Just plug and play really (the game must support linked play specifically).

I've never seen a feature where linked xboxes could share one live account through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,248 ✭✭✭derv

yeah i don't think you can share online accounts as the account is locked ot one machine only
i'm sure there are ways around it though.

how easy is it to move your live account to a different PC or a different broadband package.

i.e. i have eircom bb at home and will be moving back to college and going for breeze or rip wave or something

also, is it possible to transfer files from one xbox to another through crossover cable.

or would i need a memory card ?
i need to copy all my game profiles from one box to another.

    is it a simple process?

I can make you a cross over cable if you want and as far as I am aware you can trasfer files between them. I have a friend who can access files on his pc from his xbox so I'm assuming ya can do that with two xboxs as well! Let me know about the cable!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

You require a modded xbox (2 of em) to trnasfer data from one, to the other, same with pc, the only thing you will gain with a crossover cable, and 2 xbox's is system link multiplayer.

so i have no way of getting my profiles on to my xbox ?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

I think that you can copy profiles and game saves from one to the other using a memory card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,248 ✭✭✭derv

    that's what i thought ,
has anyone done it that can verify this ?

If you dont have 2 modded xboxes then you'll have to use a memory card of some sort (DIY or retail)

If the xboxes are modded then I'd reccomend the Xbox savegame manager included with unleashx to discover the name of the folders within the e:\UDATA\ folder that contain the game profiles you want. Once you know that you can ftp them across via a crossover cable.

Also, you can play with multiple unmodded or modded xboxes online through xlink KAI and xbconnect with one account if you need to

Oh yeah, you might as well get galwaydude to make you a cable as you'll get ripped off in the shops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,248 ✭✭✭derv

    thanks for the info.

i have heard a lot about this KAI , i must admit i know nothing about it but i would like to look into it.

i will defo get a cable off galwaydude.......
    he's pretty cheap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

what lenght of cable do you need derv? If can lodge the money into my AIB account online or by paypal today I can make the cable tonight and post it to you tomorrow! PM with your details...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

HMV are charging €50, (€33 maybe?) for a 8MB memory unit, so instead, buy a third party one for cheap in GAME, or DIY yourself one, (usb memory key) you can pick em up for €15, with 128Mb.

how would i use the USB on an xbox ? there are no ports are there ?

    elighten me... :D

Get the dongle from your xbox pad, crack it open, solder a female usb to the correct colours, (overlook the extra yellow cable on xbox) now you have a usb port, WITHOUT opening your xbox, or wasting a controller port... i think you can get pre-built ones, but its to easy to pay for.

seems a bit too complicated for me tbh.
    opening the joypad.. that's easy
the soldering would be the hard part , for me anyway.
    where would i get a female usb ? off a PC ?

its not the controller, it's the dongle, (the little cable that breaks away) so thats easy, theres only 4 wires to solder, so its not hard (although first time i tried it wasnt a plesent sight) works though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,248 ✭✭✭derv

sure i might give it a try,
can you explain it to me in more detail ?
where exactly do i open the cable ?

and once that is done how exactly do i get stuff on to it ? etc

    cheers for the help

The big joypad connectors are USB (remember the xbox is just a PC) but you have to make a convertor for connecting standard USB devices. You dont even have to solder or open your joypad, just use insulating tape and buy an xbox extender cable from Game (about €5) for the xbox end of the cable, hack that open (give yourself a few feet of cable to be safe) and tape a female USB connector on to it by matching the coloured wires up (you can cut these connectors (and a few feet of cable) off USB extender cables bought in any PC shop). Once you have a mem card that you can hook up to a PC as well, you might as well softmod your xbox.

but why waste a perfectly good cable? when u can jusr add a usb port, instead of replacing it, you cant connect controller then, least my way you can still use your dongle for your pad and memory unit/or usb device. just get the female usb off an old cable.

my post wasnt clear on this so I just edited it! You dont interfere in any way with the xbox controller port or the joypad using this method. All you are doing is creating a male-xbox to female-USB cable by joining an xbox controller extender cable and a usb extender cable. It works for me and only cost me €5 for the xbox extender cable and I didnt have to solder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

oh right, i get ya, but i already had an xbox pad, and a soldering iron, so it was easy! didnt need to buy any cables cause i had a usb female cable under me bed!! lol :)

So its not this part of the controller that you are on about then?

Sorry, I should have read that properly first. It is on about adding a usb port to a xbox memory card. Can't quite figure out why they would need to do that but that was clearly some dodgy googling on my part.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

128Mb instead of 8Mb i assume? why they connected it to normal xbox memory unit is beyond me :confused:

so basically.... i get a controller extension cable, snip the top off it and join it to the controller cable i am using.
so that there is like a fork in the cable where on goes to the controller and the other goes to the female USB.......
    am i right ?

and do i join the female USB to the other end of extension cable in the same way?

where would i get a female extension cable? and how much?

so then i could use this little device on any xbox by simply plugging out my controller and using it ona different xobx , because the USB is on the controller cable ?

Not quite. You dont have to touch your controller cable. You only need three things to connect a usb memory stick to your xbox:

    1. An xbox extender cable, cut in half so that you are left with the male end and a foot or so of cable with the four coloured wires sticking out.

    2. A USB extender cable, cut so that you are left with the female end and a foot or so of cable with its four wires sticking out.

    3. insulating tape so that you can join the four wires from each together to make a cable which plugs into your xbox but has a standard USB port on the other end for inserting normal PC USB memory sticks

Once you plug the cable into your xbox, plug in the USB memory stick into the cable. Then go to the 'memory' setting on the xbox and select the memory unit and format it.

This cable is essentially what you are making from two 'butchered' cables:

True, it's only a fiver after all :) I made one 'cos I needed one in a hurry and I just happened to have a USB extender cable and a quick shop in Game got me the xbox extender cable.

Now your getting the hang of this! good question, but if you look closely it is actually a female USB A connector like the ones on the back of your PC

Softmods give you all the features of a modchip but you also need an exploitable game such as an early version of mechassault or splinter cell in order to load the hacked gamesave (which you also need to source). Do a bit of reading on Krayzie's autoinstaller and the UXE gamesave exploit + nkpatcher that it uses. All the info is on pinned threads within the www.xbox-scene.com forums and there's a bit of info on the boards.ie console modding forum.

I should point out that I've never softmodded using a USB memory stick as I think it involves an extra step on the PC. It's much easier to use the action replay memory card for the xbox available in Game or online for about €20. It makes transferring gamesaves from the PC to xbox a doddle.
