ITunes skipping (and other players too)

I'm running an XP laptop with 256 megs of ram. Lately, for no appearant reason, the ITunes and other MP3 players will refuse to play back smoothly if ANYTHING is being done on the computer. Opening/using firefox, the wordpad, anything, always makes the audio skip. Yet i checked the processes and memory use and everything…

try typing "msconfig" in the run menu and see if anything is starting that shouldnt be in the start up tab check the location and if in doubt try unloading one app at a time and reboot to see if that does anything. Obviously you should be running a firewall antivirus and ad&spyware programmes.
