    hi all

just wondering about the correct form for performing straight leg deadlifts.

I've been feeling them nicely in my hamstrings but today i was corrected on my form that my back should be kept straight.
I reduced the weight to make it easier for correct form but i found that all this did was take the stress away from my hamstrings and nearly completely onto my lower back  any advice/links appreciated

also could someone distinguish between straight leg and stiff leg deadlifts in terms of technique and muscle groups worked??

    thanks

I was advised to arch my back a bit while doing (bent) leg deadlifts, in order to avoid the possibility of bending it.
I think deadlifts are suposed to target the lower back rather than hamstrings. The only exercise I know that really focuses on hamstrings is hamstring curls.

I would say try the usual sources for tips and illustrations on form. Exrx.net google images, misc.fitness.weights newsgroup etc. IME not many people do straight leg deadlifts because they are afraid of them. Have to say I'm wary of them myself too. But I'm sure they're fine if you work up slowly and are very very VERY careful with form.

Personally I'm not sure of the difference between a stiff leg and a straight leg deadlift. On exrx there seem to be 3 of these type exercises
    -straight back stiff leg deadlift
    -straight back straight leg deadlift
-straight leg deadlift (with a rounded back)

    thanks for that guys

this would be the exercise that i'm doing.
The guy who corrected me advised me to do this

However like i said this did nothing for my hamstrings. I actually have fairly poor flexibility with my hamstrings(something i'm starting to address) so i'll stick with my original exercise.

link giving info about research of exercises' safety
