Across the ocean of doom, past the man eating sharks and onwards, to Oldham where I'll spend a week or so in Quannum gym working on some MMA. Then afterwards I'll proceed to ride the ghost train down to London where I'll train with Roger gracie for 4 weeks in prep for the nationals (god knows I need it!).

Cya all when I get back. I'll do a big write up on the experience! Be good.

Howya lads. In saddleworth library (just outside diggle where I'm training) at the moment - We arrived yesterday, got a few hours kip and then went to a submission wrestling class hosted by Leigh Remedios. Class was nice. About 10 - 12 people there.. We went overr some submissions and transitions from north/south, and Leigh pointed out the details of each submission.

After that we rolled, I rolled with some big guy (everyone's a big guy to me) and took his back twice with armdrags and tapped him with a RNC. I've been working on this from watching the Marcelo Garcia tapes and then John Kavanagh pointed out alot of details at his seminar which helped a great deal. I'm starting to have some great success rates with it.

We don't have much to do today, there is an olympic wrestling class later and then boxing fitness afterwards. No submission wrestling so me and Shane are going to laze around on the net for an hour, grab a bite to eat and then go up to the gym to roll for a bit.

Having a good time so far, next week we head down to Roger Gracie's place for 3 or 4 weeks. Looking forward to it.

Note to self: Never take the bus over to Manchester when you can fly :(

It's great. We didn't do much yesterday.. We rolled around for a while and then Leigh arrived with some guy from Holland. We worked on some knee ride stuff and then rolled around for a bit. The holland guy likes his heelhooks, Shane's knee is in pain today. He got his revenge however :)

Tonight is MMA class so it will be fun. We get to throw down in the cage.

Heelhooks, ow. My achilles is in pain today from one such lock!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

Yeah, he cranked it pretty hard.. Shane felt his knee clicking. Guy tried to heel hook me too but I had to kick him off of me. I don't fancy limping around for the next month.

hmm yeah knee is fairly sore but he didn't intentionally hurt me, plus i'm not used to heelhooks in training, probably shouldn't have used so much rubber guard afterwards after too, oh well, no pain no gain. the atmosphere in quannum gym is really friendly and leigh is amazing to train with, for a wrestler he has an amazing guard. if you come to train with him then he'll go out of his way to help you, he came along early to train with us two yesterday, learned some nice little tricks, anyway, to make a long story even longer, quannum gym is good, training here is good, fighters and atmosphere is good, i recommend this place because . . well . . its good ;)

Just got to London yesterday, starting training in Roger Gracie's tomorrow. It's going to be weird getting strangled with a gi :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

Started training last night in Roger's. Went to beginner's and advanced classes. It was a really good experience. Worked on some spider guard sweeps and some subs from high mounts. Then rolled for about half an hour in each class. Tapped some white belts, got to roll with a decent purple belt and got dismantled ;(

Why'd he let you knee him?? :D

Now grind him into the cage like Randy Couture!!!

àh look at dlofnep. he's so cute and small like a teddy bear. i just want to hug and kiss him. i reckon he's up there will tim murphy as the most unlikely looking MMA fighter. no offence to the man tim_m, fair dues for getting in the ring and kncking peoples heads but seriously, you look like a choir boy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

Looks are deceiving in Tim's case, he can knock you out. me on the other hand, I couldn't harm a flea if I tried.

well i've seen him fight, that was never in question. baby faced assasin i'd dub him.

how's the training going john? can you tell you've improved already? you doing much in the gi?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

I just got back from London yesterday. Training went great. I've definitely improved. my clinch is a little more solid from working in Quannum. My striking is a tad better (although it's still poor) and my jiu-jitsu is a little better also. It was well worth the trip! We'll see how it's served me when I compete in the bjj championships in october and the mma league this winter. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33 venice_irk

yeah we'll see. i'll seek you out and give you a quick roll etc. i doubt i'll be droping 20kg by then.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

No problem, looking forward to it :)

You should come down to Waterford for JK's seminar.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33 venice_irk

i would actually but i'm in belfast on a college field trip!!! sucks. been training with jk a little bit this month, in his own words:

he's a little bit like spider man

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,995 ✭✭✭Tim_Murphy

hmmm, should I be offended of not?!

And I thought doing MMA fights would be enough to get a tough guy image going, damn it, now I have to get a tattoo and shave my head before my next fight!! :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

Get a tattoo that says "I'm a bad boy". That will surely rough up your image. Oh, and get sunglasses!
