Music Software and Recording on a PC

I'm going to set up a kind of recording studio on my PC for my own use. I'm just looking for advice on what software and hardware would be best to record instruments. I use Reason, Acid, Cubase and various editing software. Is it just a case of getting a MIDI controller and plugging the guitar/bass/piano into it and using the software to record it?

    Thanks
