CD burner on Targa laptop acting up

    Folks,

I have a three year old Targa visonary and the CD burner is not working properly. The CDs burn without any failures but recently burned audio CDs have a noisy static sound in the background. They don't play in the car cd player anymore either.

Anybody experienced this? Any tips on how I might be able to fix it?

Some data CDs burned fine. Others reported errors.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dopey

it looks like the cdrw is failing, you could try using a cd cleaner to ensure that it is not dirt on the lens, else you'll have to replace the cdrw, either buying an external one or sending the laptop back to targa to be replaced( though this can be very expensive as you encur all labour and courier costs)

Cheers daywalker. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I haven't used CD cleaners before. Can you recommend any? I can drop into Dixons over the weekend and see what they have.

their pretty much all the same, doesnt really matter which brand, it consists of mainly an audio cd which plays back music as the brushes on the underside brush across the laser cleaning off dust.

The CD/RW or DVD/RW in many laptops are standard items and can be bought from as little as 70 yoyo for a CDRW or 85 for a DVDRW (komplett).
The only problems I've had are that some notebooks use CS and others Master/Slave but this can be sorted by someone brave with a soldering iron.
