Changing Hosting / DNS

OK, I've signed up for a new hosting account and have a mirror of my site loaded on their servers.

They tell me I now have to change the DNS for my domain to point to my new hosts.

Question: How do I do this? I know full well if I phone my current (ex) Hosts they will deliberately pull the plug to cause maximum downtime - they've pulled this kind of **** before; once threatening to cut off my service unless their invoice was paid immediately after I told them I was 'thinking of moving hosts) and telling me they need 1 month's notice. Anyone who wants the name of these cowboys PM me so you can avoid them.

SO: can I get in touch with anyone else to have the DNS pointed towards my new hosts, what's the best way to do it?

    thanks in advance!

    what domain is it for?

.ie is a swine, but everything else should be handy enough, you shouldn't have to contact your current host, which should make you fairly happy.

    .ie sadly.

New crowd reckon they've got it in hand, so we shall see.

I changed 2 there recently, I had to fax the iedr as the administrative contact on both of them to request them to change the technical contact, so that the new host/technical contact could change the dns settings.

Check this out for more information, as I didn't think anyone but the admin contact could send this fax. Maybe I'm wrong...

I would be interested to hear the name of cowboy company in question, if you would care to drop me a pm...

Hmm, we'll see what they come back with. I've got 4 weeks that I've paid up with my previous hosts, i.e. the internet providers.

Jesus Christ, this is like pulling teeth.

Sent fax into IEDR. Heard nothing phoned them 1 week later. Theysaid "oh yes, the domain's been transfered". Did a check and its still with original host company. Phoned up Host Ireland, they tell me, "don't worry it'll take 24-48 hours to go through". 48 hours later nothing so I phone Host Ireland again "Oh, nobody has changed the DNS - we'll look into it and get back to you". Receive an email saying "you need to contact IEDR and have them change the DNS information to our servers".

FFS! How ****ing hard can this be? It seems like none of these morons have a) done this before or b) have any idea what they're talking about.

Step 1: Send fax to iedr in the am
Step 2: Ring iedr, to see if they have acted on it, in the pm
Step 3: If negative result at step 2 hound iedr until postive

At this point the new host will have control of the domain name details, including contacts and nameserver details. The iedr database will not be changed at this stage, however, as the iedr will not change the details without a second fax, and even then... So the iedr database will be exactly as it was with the only change being that your old host cannot change the details but will still be listed as the technical contact or some such, your new proposed host will be able to change the details, but they won't be listed as your technical contact, and indeed won't even know about it until you bring it to their attention.

Step 4: Inform new host so that they can change the details on the iedr, especially the all important nameserver details.
Step 5: Hound new host until iedr details have changed.

At this stage your new host should be where your site is accessed from and its time to start working from there.

Thats how it went for me, all two times of doing it. Hope its of some use.
