Sweet deal for students only, I'm off to the States shortly and was thinking of picking up a new ibook there but this new deal will keep the business in Ireland.

It's buy a new mac and ipod together and get €150 back (ipod mini is €192).

There is a similar deal Stateside but it's the usual post-back 'rebate' coupon for a cheque pain in the ass.

This one's a "post-back 'rebate' coupon for a cheque pain in the ass" too, you know. I'm quite irritated myself, though, not for it being a rebate affair, but for the fact that I only bought myself a Powerbook a few weeks ago off Apple's educational store, and could have well used a cheap iPod to go with it.

True :D but it's a lot easier to cash a euro cheque to my bank account living in Dublin than it would be to receive (never mind somehow cash!) a bloody dollar cheque!

Can't blame you. There's always something like that though, you buy and shortly after they upgrade the range or whatever. Ironically the only thing that stopped me buying before now is cashflow probs that will hopefully be sorted out in a couple of weeks :)

Even had to sell my old ipod to make ends meet :( , am thinking about treating myself to the 60gig colour unit when the time comes.

Ah, no worries really. It's what you've got to deal with whenever you buy anything technological. I was planning on waiting for a 10GB iPod Mini anyways, so no real reason to get pissed off about it. You're quite right about the rebates being easier over here, although, out of interest, how difficult would it be to buy something off the American Apple eduational store anyway, given that you'd be a student over here?

No idea to be honest but I'm hoping to be in New York at the end of Sept so was just gonna go in to their retail store, show my student ID and see what happens.

The rebate prob would have proved impossible to cash so I'm glad (and somewhat pleasantly surprised) to see they are doing a similar offer over here.

You're right about tech stuff and playing the waiting game though you'd never buy anything if you keep waiting for the next big thing.

A mate is trying to convince me to hold off until the intel based machines come out next year  . Apart from the fact that I always try to avoid buying rev1 of anything I'm damned if I'm pissing around with XP stuff for another year while I wait.

I'll be quite happy with my high-end mac mini and low end 12" ibook for at least a few years.

I bought my Powerbook just after they announced the switch to Intel without any worries whatsoever, given the time-frame. Think of it this way, you've got 1 year until they even start bringing out Intel-based Macs, another year after that until they stop producing PowerPC machines, and then at least one year of full software support for both systems, followed by another year of gradually declining support for the PowerPC Macs. So, overall, you've got 3-4 years of software support for what you've bought, by the end of which the hardware would be obsolete anyway, regardless of the switchover.
