Darkrooms in Dublin

I've been considering developing B&W film at the Gallery of Photography in Temple Bar after I did a darkroom course there, but the fee is a bit too steap for my liking (€15 for 1/2 day).

Can anyone recommend other darkrooms in Dublin. Been looking at the Dublin Camera Club which has darkrooms for members (€90 a year membership).

Anyone any comments on the DCC or can recommend other places to look

Have you considered setting up your own darkroom at home? The equipment for B&W processing is pretty cheap even when new, but you'd be able to get it even cheaper second-hand, I'm sure.

I have, but unfortunately I am in a rentend apartment and I don't really have the space. I develop film no problem (have a bathroom with no window, very handy) but the bathroom wouldn't be big enough for a table with an enlarger.

Actually I was over at a friends house last weekend and got very jealous that they had a large "wash room" at the back that was just full of old boxes, not being used. It was a sink along with more than enough space for a comfortable dark room. Very jealous :p

they have good kit there, great washer and drying facilities, perfect water system, expert advice. you'll get a lot of printing done in 3 hours. if money is tight you might get it for the student rate.

you know to be honest €15 per half day isnt bad, i've my own darkroom coz i lived too far from temple bar to keep going in there.

if someone wanted to rent my darkroom i have to say i'd charge more than €15 which probably just about covers insurance on the building.

Needs must when the devil drives ...

My grandad had his darkroom in a walk-in fitted wardrobe for years. No running water there, just a large tray with water to dunk the prints in at the end which was refreshed every now and then. Developing film can be done outside of the darkroom anyway, so that's not a real problem. He made some clever shelving with the enlarger on one side, and the trays on the other. It was just about big enough for him and me to be in there at the same time, at least when I was 9 or 10, anyway.

My father made a large wooden box with a hinged lid that the enlarger was fastened to on the inside. This was carted into the bathroom and positioned over the bath. You opened the box lid, propped it up, and slid a piece of wood over the top of the open box, and hey presto. The rest of the box was used for storage for chemicals and paper. He even made his own enlarger.

You young 'uns today don't know how easy you have it :)
