We stayed in the President Hotel on W38th St - right besided Times Square. We payed about $60 per night in January but Im sure it would be more in the summer. Have a look http://www.hotelpresidentnewyork.com/

We are goiing to stay at the Metro hotel which is very close to the empire state building and I didn't think it was too dear by new york prices (for august). It has excellent reviews on trip advisor-wherever you are thinking of choosing check its reviews first on trip advisor.

    Good luck!!

not sure how long you're staying, but if its only a few days, try and make it around the weekend. its far cheaper.
the pennsylvanian is cheap, and smack bang in the middle of manhatten,. rooms are crap, but considering most of the time you're there you'll be asleep, that shouldnt matter.

I have never stayed there, but got good reviews on trip advisor, rooms are from 99 a night and it is very very central

i wandered all over manhatten, even into areas where you feel a little, edgy, but its fine.
as for the mcclane analogy, just dont go above 90th street (i think).
to be honest, if you feel uneasy, just uturn and go back where you came and get a taxi.
oh, and stay of the underground at night as the above says.

as for jfk, its miles away from manhatten, if you dont want to pay the 45 dollars standard rate to manhatten in a taxi, the way i used was getting the monorail (this travels between the terminals in jfk and the nearest railway stns) to Jamaica station, from here you can get a regular train into penn station, which is smack bang in the middle of manhatten. this is far cheaper but will take between an hour or two.

    hope i helped
great city, you'll have a class time.

so is it worth staying in jfk as it is cheaper than in manhatten, on second thought manhatten is prob safer as i would have to use the underground at night. maybe if i dress up like a warrior i might get away with it..................................................................................................
thanks for the info i will have a great time!!!

Ermm, you really don't want to spend your holiday at a hotel out near JFK - it's a reasonable trip in and back. It's not exactly a thriving locale in the evenings either..

to be honest, if you wandered aound manhatten in a warrior costume, you'll probably be grand, especially if you stare straight ahead, give an odd twitch and shout "tchviskitit - honauuuuuuuu" on the odd occasion.
doing this will defo make your trip rememberable. lol

Can't give advice on a hotel as I stayed with relatives of a friend but I can give some advice on NY.

A note about the monorail from JFK to Manhatten, you do not pay for the train journey till you get off at the other side. (This confused us when we arrived at JFK and used the monorail)

Also, if you are going to use the subway (who doesn't in NY) and are staying there for around a week it would be worth your while to get a weekly ticket. It costs $25 and we found it invaluable. It can be purchased at one of the ticket machines in the subway stations. With that ticket you can take as many journeys as you like on the subway for a week.

Also, regardless of what you might read we found the New Yorkers to be lovely. On a number of occassions people stopped to help us out with directions.

    A.
