I used to learn whole albums to get my bass chops together. Prove You Wrong by Prong was pretty tough for finger playing, as was Rust In Peace by Megadeth and I got most of Control And Resistance by Watchtower down too before I went on the piss for a number of years :(

I still play Prove You Wrong every now and then just to keep nimble :)

Christ, last time I actually learnt a song? Maybe Vai's For The Love Of God. Way beyond my abilities though. Probably the last full song was Enter Sandman :p

Yeah, had some troubles and I went on a 6 year bender, pretty much stopped playing for a while. Ahhhh that's just the way it goes. Still, I'm back now with a healthy appreciation for what it takes to play to a good standard.

I think it's a great way to practice, to learn other people's tunes. I'd still play along to any album I stick on. Keeps your ear sharp and your fingers mobile. Do you practice anything apart from Rush, Baggio? ;)

Motorbreath by Metallica and ****ing Hostile by Pantera kind of melted my arms!

I wish I could play along to CD's, damn drums, I need isolation headphones!

Could I even play a full album? probably Masters Of Reality!

    Doc,
,,,goood stuff my man and good question..well these days moneys so damm tight that im finger/hand tapping to rush and others,,, I did however for a few years used to tie in to Jethro Tull albums too, when they had Barrymore Barlow the best British drummmer i can remember ,his stuff could be so intricate and interesting a true master i still love his stuff...sooo ..yes!!!,, not just Rush..but Peart always formed the backdrop to my style to be honest....
Another unsung hero was Les Binks from Judas Priest on their stained class and following album cant remember now had "hell bent for leather " was on it!...he was a great drummer saw them and him action great band then. So Ive drummed to a few different bands overall.
Without a doubt tho hardest songs to play are/were: Tom Sawyer - Rush...... and: Between The wheels - Rush - was the longest i had to learn as the beats are basically formed by a reggae style rythm by synth/guitar , with snare and hi hat snips over them and a kinda laid back bas drum tap underneath - was tricky playing it alone, but playing with the music could be a bugger! , as you kept listening to the song and getting lost!!..great song tho on Grace Under Pressure...has one of Alex Lifesons most amazing soaring guitar solos the man is a true master for sure :)

    ciao' amigo's...Baggio....

Baggio, you crazy bastard...i didnt think anyone was actually insane enough to even attempt playing any Peart :D

As for me, when i was a teenager, i swore that my life would be complete and i'd be ready to die once i learned how to play the entire Rust in Peace album from A-Z.....Boy, little did i know how i overshot it a bit with the standard i set. :p

Needless to stay, still struggling like a bitch.

The bass riff in Hysteria by Muse isnt too difficult, but i cant seem to ever play it properly. I can play stuff that sounds more difficult, but it is one of those riffs that has screwed me over so much now that ive given up on it. I dont like muse too much, but i lived with a bunch of guys who were massive fans and always wanted me to play it.

Damage Inc by Metallica and Needled 24/7 by CoBodom are two songs that arent too complicated, just pure speed, which are hard to get up to speed to play, but i can sometimes play them ;)

    This http://www.tabcrawler.com/archive.php?action=view&file_id=2396

I had it down a few years ago, I'd have to relearn it again though :/

Prob 'William it was really nothing'' by the Smiths ! the rhythm is very fast and theres some very hard picking sections. There was no decent tab to learn from so had to work it out by ear from scratch and create my own tab ..

Also honourable mentions to 'some girls are bigger than others' and 'girl afraid' for teaching me how to pick and 'This Charming man '...all hard smiths tunes...he's an inimitable fecker that Johnny Marr...

don't really know i lose interest half way into tough song...rush spirit of radio and kid gloves (can play the main bits) and i suppose floyd comfortably and knopfler sultans of swing

don't really have one tbh, not sayin i'm deadly but most of the stuff i play is relatively easy, but i have only bin playin seven months or so, so you know.

I mainly just play albums, all the qotsa ones, all the rage against the machine, a good chunk of zeppelin, the doors a few others.

One that did take me a while was when the levee breaks come to think of it, but thats cos i had zero independence and coordination whne i started to learn it. :o

most vai stuff is arkward to learn, once u learn some of joe's songs, u kinda move onto steve's and But wen u get it its alota fun! the hardest one is juice probably, its at a fast tempo throughout and the tapping bits are a toughy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

I like Juice, all the different tones with just the plectrum are fun to play. Some nice chord progressions aswell.
