Hey, I just got a dvd writer from komplett.ie today so I said i'd take a crack off installing it. I had 2 drives ( one dvd and one cdr ) so I took out the cdr drive and replaced it with new drive . I set the jumpers on the new drive to slave becuase that is what they were set as on the old drive ( cdr ). So when I start the computer I see the lights on both the drives lighting but when I go into My Computer there are no cd-drives at all... dvd or dvd/r. Anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Thanks

Go to device manager control panel/performance & maintenance/system & see if its there, if not right click on a blank space & scan for hardware changes... If its still not seen check ide cables

ok tried that still the same. It's not showing either of the disc drives in device manager either. It's this drive

check one at a time, with both ide connectors, one drive with both ide connectors and then the other,

also is cable selection enabled in BIOS?

my problem was probably because, I set the jumpers wrong, NEC drives don't have a drawing of which jumper setting is which on them, or maybe I didn't them, well I didn't bother too much, I knew my old NEC drive was set to cable select so I just set the new one to those jumpers too.

Ok i tried connecting the drives one at a time to my computer. When i connected my original one everything was fine. But when I connected the new one ( dvdr ) I got this error
"A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME "
Now hwne I restart my computer it loads and then asks to insert a boot disk. I am going to re-install windows and try again but does anyone have any other ideas what I could do??

ooh geez, that might be your hard drive problem, I maybe wrong, but I think that your new cdrom didn't install cause, your hard drive is damanged, and windows couldn't find/install drivers for it.

do you have another computer to check it(CDRom) on?

    I hope I'm wrong but here's what I found

maybe this will help but your ide connectors were fine right?
