I don't know if anyone's heard this yet, but UCD is being renamed. no joke. the new name is going to be, wait for it, UCD Dublin. They're re-signposting the entire campus, and redesigning the logo etc etc

The big emphasis is on DUBLIN. Crest will be in the modern UCD colours and still have the castles the shape changes slightly. Crest is being unveiled today to staff....

It's the money they're spending on a complete waste of time and effort though that could be gone on more productive things, anything would be a better use of funds than that.

Waste of time, effort and money etc.. All they should have done was streamline all of the various institutes/centres/colleges/schools logos to UCD....whatever as the different names cause such confusion. Which by the way the new structure will clarify in my eyes all good.

The new crest is a disaster a five year old would have being more imaginative...

What's the fuss? It's not like it's going to cost much, if it makes UCD easier to recognise and raises our profile, then that's got to be a good thing. Renaming the centres to include UCD is a very good idea, I'm tired of the media and other universities always crediting various centres and departments without mentioning that they're part of UCD.

Also, the crest including the word Dublin is a very sensible idea.

In future when someone speaks from a UCD rostrum, or writes a letter on headed paper it's going to have UCD blazed on it so people'll know who's doing it. Currently we miss out on credit for much of the work we do in Ireland and abroad, now we're going to hit people over the head with it, we are UCD, this is our work.

UCD-heads are always opposed to changes they themselves haven't initiated personally. It's a very bad habit.

I haven't heard the college is being renamed anywhere else but here, but even so, keep an open mind, is UCD Dublin, really so appalling?

Yes, UCD Dublin is hillariously pathetic.

If they wanted more recognition, have a new crest, with UCD on it (which can be blazed wherever the hell you want!)! :eek: If there any other UCD stealing claim to the work of UCD Dublin, no? The new crest without Dublin on it would not be so bad, but its barmy when its not to distinguish itself from another institution named UCD. Will we have TCDD and DCUC a DITD? No, probably not, because anyone doing it would have the common sense to know that Dublin City University Dublin sounds incredibly childish, American almost (ADAA as someone else has pointed out!).

University College Dublin Dublin just strikes me as something a retarted four year old monkey could do better than. Why not UC Dublin then if they feel the need? It's just hilarious to think they're pumping money into this yet won't send out Exam Cards in the post as its a "waste of money"!

I've no problem with them changing the crest, although I liked the old one because it had the two mottos on it

Cothram na Feinne, which is Irish for "a fair deal", and
Ad Astra, which is Latin, (I think!) for "to the stars"

I liked them, but if they want to change the crest then fair enough it might generate more publicity or whatever. What I definitely do not agree with is renaming UCD as University College Dublin Dublin, primarily because it sounds ridiculous, and if anything will make us a laughing stock among other colleges around the world.
