    Are you sure about that???

The last time I checked SAT ISP's have a QOS in place whereby hight volume downloaders are placed on a lower tier and get very ppor speeds until they cough up more money!!!

for satellite you still need dial up

and you will want to have your upload running while you are connected to satellite so that you don't have to dial up when you want to send a email, even if you get anytime with 180 hours you are still being limited by hours.

online gaming is impossible with high latency, basically satellite is useless to the average home user unless you are in the sticks and there's a 100% chance of not getting some other form of broadband (ADSL, wireless, cable)

a very big price. dont think its worth it

Yes, there is 2-way satelite available, but as above the latency is really poor. I found 128k ISDN better for average web-surfing.

I have seen this working and it's fast! My collegue is currently running there 16mbps download speed! They offer 5 options, 512kpbs pay as you go, 512kpbs unlimted, 1024kpbs unlimited, 4mbps unlimited and 16mbps unlimited.

Requires a modem (@ 149.99 or 99.00 euro) and also a standard sky dish. As the satelites for Sky and the dsl are so far apart the dish will not do both, supply tv satelite and the internet download. One or the other but not both.

As I said, I have seen the 16mbps package in action - constant 2mbps+ download rate! It is supposed to be for dial up request and satelite download but is supposed to work with the two way satelite systems also, taking over the download side obviously. We're still having some configuration problems in this area though of testing.

IMHO there is no reason why anybody cannot avail of very fast download speeds especially the home user who really only needs the faster upload speed for e-mail attachements. Foregoing that problem, I can't see why broadband download speeds are not available nationwide now and offered by the major players, Eircon, BT etc. They could easily make this package available now and if they hooked into there ISDN package, correctly charged for, it would mean very high speed broadband services available nationwide to all and not just the 4mbps promissed in the major citys.

Not allowed to post a link to the Irish suppliers of this service as I've allready been told it's a 'Naughty' for me to do that but if you want the link PM for details..

As for the two way Satelite (currently I use this kind of system) It's ok, Latency isn't that much of a problem, two major players Mediasat and Digiweb. 120euro per mnth supposedly unlimted but subject to a 'Fair Usage' policy. Or they cap you at 500megs up, 3gigs down mediasat though will only cut you during the day, between 8pm/8am speeds are unrestricted even if you are over the 3 gig limit.

Eircon also have a Satelite package run via or through mediasat though they don't advertise this option as available widely.

ISDN is one of Eircon's biggest rippoffs. Can't say for the other suppliers as I haven't as yet investigated there charging procedure.

If you look at what they advertise and what you have to pay for, the service is as I put it to Eircom, 'Extortinate'. It's how they view the service. ISDN 128kbps needs 'Two' lines. You can use your existing phone line for 64kbps but thats all you will get. To get what they advertise, 128kpbs a second line is required. This is not classed as 'Part' of the ISDN package but as an additional cost incurred by the customer at an accumalative charge of use. You can now avail of ISDN packages similar to dial up packages but these only came about after Eircon were literally forced into it.

The catch is in there advertising and by the use of 'Upto' and 'Possible'. They only 'Imply' you can get 128kbps, not that you 'Are' getting that which is assumed by the customer.

Which is why (and how) they can get away with offering you a specific service but then milk that service via the needed second phone line. Technically, all they are offering you is a 64kbps dial-up connection. The full ISDN service is only true where the second line is utilised. This package should include the second line as an integral part of the ISDN package as without it you do not have ISDN.

Basically what there doing is technically illegal but they get away with it through a few fancu words.

Unless you really need the extra 6-8kbps upload speed then it's not a valid option and if you are only after download speed increase then it in no way compares with the skydsl package.

btw - yeah - you probably guessed, I'm a disgruntled ISDN ex-user. I think I had it all off 5 weeks lol :)

Yeah - I'm using a package by mediasat though I didn't get the dish/modem of them as the equipment/install/connection package is way over the top.

I searched on e-bay.co.uk and hit lucky with a ex-bt system from there for 140quid (200 yoyo's). Cost me 400euro for configuration/connection + 99+vat a month. All in all set up cost me 600euro.
You get 512 down/128up supposedly unlimited but it's subject to 'A Fair Usage' policy. (Not exactly unlimited then, though thats what they advertise). You get 3gigs down per mnth and 500megs up after that your capped or throttled back. I'm gonna be complaining about the level of restriction as they've been restricting me so badly between 8am and 8pm that it's worse than a dial up users download! (1-2kpbs!)

Not very happy with it in those circumstances, otherwise when it's running at the 512k down, it does have a slight latency which is really not noticible and average download rate is 60-70kpbs minimum (Lge files) ... Cost is borderline effective but I personally have no other alternative as a webmaster - I need it. Allready in my area I know three good web systems designers put out of work because of these issues. Even though we were promissed that our local exchange would be enabled last year and now we're told maybe next year..
