I`ve just finished season 2 of the show and imo its the best cop show that has ever been produced and one of the best tv shows ever.

Anyone else seen it and liked it?

I`ve yet to see season 3 and 4.I have the first 2 seasons on R2 dvd and am waiting for news of season 3 release.

Season 3 is out on R1 but I`d like to keep them matched

I was astounded how good it was when I started watching it.

Everything, the writing, the acting, the filming etc were all fantastic.

I know Channel 5 have been showing it,but are there any of the satellite channels that show it too as I cant get channel 5? :(

Come now, you can't just make an overblown comment like that without at least naming some of these other shows...oh and please don't mention something like CSI...
Homicide; Life on the Street and The Wire are about the only things that can compete.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭tvnutz

CSI isnt exactly a cop show though,is it? The Wire is great,I loved Third Watch...Im sure there are other great cop shows,Ive heard NYPD Blue was very good for many years.

Ive never seen the shield either in case you were thinking I was saying these shows are better than it,i was just naming cop shows :)

Law & Orders are pretty good shows too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭tvnutz

I never liked the Law and order shows tbh

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

SVU and the original Law and Order are great...not too fussed about the other one; you know the one where they show you the start from the criminal's perspective?
NYPD blue I followed for ages, but eventually lost track.
Third watch I've not seen a lot of...

Yes it was a fantastic show for the first 6 or 7 seasons until they started using rent-a-partner tactics for Andy Sipowicz, still waiting for RTE to show the last couple of seasons

The Shield is just class all the way, I am up to episode 4 of season 4 and it is continuing it’s very high standard

THe shield is great, as is CSI as is Third watch as is Law and Order, as is 24, as is Alias..... What good British/English police type shows are there?

    John

"Cops" is the only one that sticks in my mind; grittily excellent. Apart from that; are there any?
I personally don't like CSI; too polished...too contrived...and David Caruso just makes me trn off the TV no matter what he's in for some odd reason...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

.... CSI, not CSI Miami. Cops? Is that a real life show?

    John

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

No but might as well have been...made by BBC Manchester in and around 1999.
Had that guy out of Early Doors in it...Henshaw is it?
Looked for a link to somehting on the BBC site but only mentions; no direct detail...

Ther are lots of watchable UK police shows, not many great ones though.

Between The Lines was one of the better ones but by far the best British cop show ever was Out of The Blue from 10 years ago.

Well, if you are going to answer the question yourself...

Those two are in a different class to The Shield.

Apart from those alreasy mentioned, NYPD Blue, L&O and Third Watch (not really a cop show to begin with but great anyway) there is always the original brilliance of Hill Street Blues.

A few others you probably haven't seen or heard of would be Under Suspicion and EZ Streets, both only lasted for one season but were excellent.

As for the best I'd go with The Wire, the first few seasons of Homicide were marginally better but the last two seasons were a disappointment and the movie was awful. The Wire is practically a sequel to the early seasons of Homicide anyway.

And no, I wasn't going to suggest CSI, entertainingly dumb maybe but great? I don't think so.

Thats not the case my friend. The shield is in a class of its own because its walking on new ground - not as in plot and cops etc, but in filmmaking. the shield is intense mainly because of the filming techniques ie. all hand held shots. Combine this with story, acting and striking realism and emotion it is definately this best cop show of its time.

Maybe you disagree, but as far as developing things with the new filming style youve got to give it a lot of credit, your opinion on the story and acting aside

i have people asking for air dates for season 4 on this side of the pond. these people dont want to watch through a pc. channel 5 isnt an option. TV3 showed season 3, do they have the rights to season 4

I recall their continuity announcer saying that "Vic and the lads will be back in the autumn"....but it's autumn now officially, and I've yet to even see a teaser trailer on their autumn schedule for it.

Sorry to burst your bubble but The Shield was nowhere near the first to predominantly use steadycam filming.

I have a strong suspicion that you have not seen most of the other programmes mentioned.

Wasn't "Homicide: Life on the Street" one of the first US shows to experiment fully with steadicam shots?

Excellent show, but season 3 ended without a bang, nothing wrong with that just prob too use having a cliff hanger at the end of a season like all the other shows.

Haha you know your just about right, i havent seen more then 3 episodes of the other shows. But! the shield isnt the first to predominantly use it, but it is the first to completely use it in every shot, tv wise i mean, not film wise

Excellent show. Starting to watch S2 on DVD. You really have to keep reminding yourself you are not supposed to cheer on Dect. MacKey (it's good to be bad)

The Shield is a great show all right. Season 4 is very good too and Glen Close is excelent in it. It's definitely one of the best shows on TV, and consistantly so too. Having said that, I've just finished season 3 of The Wire, and I must say I believe that The Wire is a better show.

For anyone who likes The Shield, try and get The Wire, you won't be dissappointed. It's not the same style as The Shield, and it takes an episode or two to get used to it, but it's well worth it. The first season is also available from play.com on R2 DVD now.

Indeed, MYPD Blue owned steady cam use.

Just have to add my voice to the 'Shield is brill' contingent...found meself in the flat one night and somebody had left the first series on DVD lying around.

I'm not normally the type to go in for cops'n'robbers shows; I really enjoy 'em, but don't tend to make it my thing to sit and watch 'em. Sod all else on, so i popped in Disc One.

    Jesus H Christ.

From the moment where Vic shakes down that first drug dealer (I think) the pace just didn't let up. I've never seen a show that constantly challenges the viewer to question just what colour hat Vic would be wearing if this was a Western...

By the time series 3 rolled around, back in the flat, Monday night was 'get the beer'n'crisps in' night and you were just guaranteed an hour of bang-on-the-money top notch top drawer entertainment with shedloads of 'Oh My Fcuking God' moments, that consistently push the envelope...

And it's the small things - the things that happen, and you forget about and then realise will ultimately come back...like the time Aceveda was forced to go down on that hoodlum and the pic was taken...

Bring on September 19th. I just hope it doesn't clash with Desparate Housewives... :D
