Hmm, This sport confuses me still.

Ok, I'm talking mainly about Greco-Roman and Freestyle. Not sumo or WWE.

I've heard a couple of guys here say it's good for MMA but when I look at the rules and the competitions for both of them, I just don't understand. Their rules seem ridiculous, they even make Judo look highly realistic and practical.

How can training in Wrestling be so helpful to MMA?

Being a good wrestler lets you decide if you want to fight on the ground or standing up. Its all about the control. Oh, and slams, everyone loves those.

Agreed. Considering my standup is rather poor (and I'm being generous to myself saying that), if I can't bring someone to the ground at will, it's hard for me to use my game against them. Wrestling is great for MMA as it doesn't rely on a gi or kimono for leverage. Oh and slams, everyone loves those.

i've always found with wrestling you need to get too close to your opponent. it requires much more power than judo does also.

    What's with the boots?

For traction on your feet. Wrestling isn't as quite as muscle bound as you think it is.. There is alot of technique involved.

do you or do you not dispute this? how do you know what i think.

I don't know, I've never studied judo. I'd guess judo might use less power but it does rely on a kimono.

You've never done Judo but you're so certain BJJ>Judo...

Looking for an argument, are we Kevin? Better at what? For MMA? For gi-grappling (under what rules?) better at no-gi? BJJ is inherant from Judo but empahsises more on ground work and has evolved alot since it began. Judo and BJJ are now two different styles.

Nobody should ever do wrestling. Hit each other in until somebody falls over, then BJJ is the way to go.

    Kevin,

which wrestling rules seem ridiculous to you?

The slamming part is the important bit for mma.

    Colum

negative. i've had a 'pull' with some high level judo guys, wrestled with high level freestyle/greco guys and rolled with loads of high level bjj guys and one thing consistant is that no good grappling art requires power when done correctly - just technique+timing.

I got your back Jamie, that brown belt won't do much for him against multiple attackers!

Well i had a little taste of Wrestling today with TwokingsMick. The fundamental thing is there anyway, Balance. Dropping your hips lower than the other guys. The only wrestling grip i like is the two arms under their pits, couldn't get this on mick though.

If some one asked me what to train in for standup for a MMA fight in 6months, i'd tell them to train in Wrestling and not judo, because in Wrestling, i'd imagine, you'd get more bang for your timebuck. I'd say its quicker to learn. Could be wrong.

About the strenght v skill thing, my jury is still out.

Just on a side note, i fought Mick with both of us wearing a gi and i only did a little bit better, however, for me, this just proves it's person over style.
