I am trying to install IIS on my PC. I have added it in control panel but the IIS icon is not showing in my system tray. WWWS is showing as greyed out in IIS settings. I am running XP.

Is there any way of getting this running?

You should try checking your event viewer for any problems... there may be some dependant services that have failed to start, or are disabled.

But unless you absolutely have to use IIS for some reason (maybe you're studying for an MCP or whatever), why not try the Apache web server?

I'm trying to learn ASP and was under the impression that it can only be run on PWS or IIS .... I have used apache before but with JavaScript.

What exactly am I looking for in event viewer?

Ah of course yeah ASP, right you are then.
The closest thing Apache would have is PHP, unless they've made some crazy ASP plugin I don't know about.

    Anything suspicious ;)
Errors, warnings... anything that would reference IIS and identify some point of failure.
Also check out your services, some services won't function unless others it needs are enabled... find the IIS service (assuming there is one) open the properties, and then the 'dependencies' tab... make sure IIS has everything it needs.
I can't be much more specific than that, since I'm more of an Apache person.
It should be solvable through normal troubleshooting, unless there's some specific issue... in which case the Microsoft knowledgebase is a good bet.
