I have 900 euro to spend on a new amp (I won't be able to afford the JCM 2000 TSL I was buying from here :()

I don't mind about inbuilt effects and all that crap. Just want it to be loud, have a great dirty sound and a great clean sound.

    900

Vox Ac30 goin in the buy and sell for 850. Legend among classic rock amps. If its more of a heavy sound you want I know some of the lads will recommend an engl tube amp like the thunder 50w which would be in your price range

Seems to have a very nice clean and a very good lead

Hmm a Vox seems too light (and sold :S) and an engl too heavy. :\

I'd say Engl and JCM2000 are much of a muchness "heavy"-wise. JCM2000s sound terrible though imo - thin and scratchy, so I'd say you got lucky by not having enough money.

What kind of distortion are you looking for? Can you name a band (or even a song) with something akin to the sound that you want?

In fairness Giblet, unless you're going for the ENGL Fireball, or Powerball, they really aren't that ultra-heavy at all, so you might want to look into the Thunder 50.

The kind of sounds I'm looking for would be from anything like Pink Floyd and Led Zep to Guns N Roses and AC-DC.

Right now I have the VS265, was looking at a flextone 3 (looks a bit too digital to me though) And would love a cheap JCM900 :p

The ENGL seems decent enough, I think I'll go for it. Now, for where to order it from...

Again Laneys are over looked,a Laney would have been perfect for what you described. :(

Lol no messing. Let us know what you think of the amp

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Yeah have to send in a pic of the CC and all that crap. GRRRR

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

yeah head to www.musicstore.de or something, it's most likely cheaper there anyway

*edit* ok maybe not that much cheaper

personally i would have uped the budget slightly and get the screamer..

Did you take into consideration the footswitch? they don't come with the amp and are fairly expensive depending which one you need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

I have it ordered now, and yes I got a footswitch. :D

Too "digital"? Don't get caught up in the bs. The Flextone 3 kicks the **** out of the JCM900. The JCM900 is not all valve, contrary to popular belief. Line6 do a better job emulating valve sounds than Marshall ever have.

Tbh, I think what you're looking for is a secondhand Marshall 1959 or JCM800. You could probably pick up a 50w on Ebay and stay in budget.

Ah it's too late now Eoin :D

I've never really like any of the POD stuff I've played through. All the overdrives and distortions always have this unnatural feel to them, the texture of the tone seems wrong to me, too "sawy" if you get me :S

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

you can't really compare a POD to a Flex 3 though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Yeah I know, but once bitten twice shy and all that.

Anyway, how would you rate the ENGL Thunder 322 to a Flextone (bearing in mind that effects are of little value to me besides what I have already)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

The ENGL does 3 or 4 amazing sounds and the Flextone III does loads of acceptable sounds in my opinion. The 322 is a lot more punchy and rough, the Flextone is sterile and really smooth in my experience.

Punchy and rough would be more my thing alright ;)

i lvoe my tsl100, its the prefect amp for me, and i got it for 1200 incl, cab.... so i love it......

BUT there is so much headroom on it, the TSL601 wud be just as good + im sure tis cheaper but i love tha tsl...

Some people knock the JCM2000 range and say the 900 and 800 are better but i personally like the 2000's they're great amps

 The 900 and 800 are incomparable. The 800 is one of the best and most famous hard rock amps ever made. The 900 is a piece of **** that uses diodes to get distortion. The 2000 is no 800... but at least it's no 900 either. ;)

    Niiiiiiiiiice!!

    Love the strat too!

Can't believe the shipping took under a week. I guess that gives you a few extra days before you get evicted! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Yeah the strat hasn't been getting much playing time since I got the Les Paul, but the Les Paul is in another house at the moment so it's the Fenders time to shine. Sounds great!

Sweet stuff man, hope it does the job alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Was playing some Pink Floyd, some AC-DC some Zeppelin and some Pantera. It all sounds perfect :)

Excellent stuff! Glad we did you good with the recommendation, it would be horrible if you came along and said it was rubbish, because then we'd never take anything you said seriously ever again. If I ever win the lotto, I'm getting myself a ENGL stack. Probably a Fireball or Powerball.
