Thanks for the reply- the airline is Monarch. It states that it's €6.50 per kilo. Are the strict when it come to charging if you are over the baggage allownace.

Tip, be nice to the check in people!

Was coming back from Stanstead last summer with ryanair (stanstead to cork). Baggage was overweight. When the check in desk opened i was second in the que and there was a long que and only one person there to check everyone in. When it was my turn i said in a soft nice voice "Hello, how are you?"
She looked at me in disbelief and said, "Thanks, nobody ever asks how i am. Thanks". Well my baggage was overweight but she left me off.

Charter airlines (like Monarch) can be quite strict

Baggage charges are whatever they can get off you, its a scam...The airlines claim its to pay for extra fuel.. So going by that logic & thier charges , if the person beside you is 3 stone heavier than you should he pay for the extra fuel needed to get the plane into the air..On the other hand if you have children travelling who are lighter you should get an extra couple of kilo allowance....
I just thought if the fuel is bought by the weight of the luggage it wouldn't leave much room for error if there were an extra few larger people on the plane...LOL

Thanks for the replies - it's actually my sister who is flying to Crete in the morning and we think her bag may be over the 20kilo allowance. Hopefully, they'll be nice and not charge them. It's a group of 4 so maybe someone may be under the allowance. :)

:D funny but wrong its not a scam. Think about it. If there were no penalties for oversize/weight luggage and so no restrictions then everyone would be able to bring as much as they want.. can you imagine the result of everyone with 14 suitcases and 5 carry on bags each? You would have to reduce passenger numbers as luggage would take up most of the space.
Likewise if there was no penalty but there were restrictions then anyone who had oversize/wight luggage would not have the option to pay. they would simply not be able to bring the luggage and probably as a result not fly.. another unworkable solution.

so the current system is perfectly fine. And in fact VERY fair IMO. What is it for trans Atlantic flights? 60 - 70 kilos per passenger for checked baggage and then another 6 or something for hand luggage? Thats plenty. Thats 2 very heavy suitcases and a fairly hefty hand bag!!!

Fair if its handled the same for everyone , but it is not..I paid for excess baggage last year returning from Florida, the people behind me claimed they had not got the money & after a laugh & a joke with them let them off. In those cases are the honest people subsidising the others... I have seen them literally take the last penny off people before letting them board.I won't be paying this year. Has there ever been a case of someone being refused passage or being made to leave a bag behind.??

Also it's worth noting that they won't take any single item that weighs over 30kg. As well.. think of the poor baggage handlers...

Plenty, it's amazing how the seemingly penniless pull out a wad of cash when it slowly dawns on them that endless whinging and moaning won't make them more special than everyone else.

It's even funnier when it's too late and they're left behind anyway :D

Correct, be very nice to the checkin people! :D My wife and i moved to the US this year and had 6 bags (most of our lives), thats 2 over the limit so i knew i would have to pay 100 euro, 50 euro per bag. So i went over to excess baggageafter checking in and told them that i had two bags over. They asked if i had a form from the checkin person and i said they didnt give me anything. She called over to him and then came back a few minutes later and told me it was ok and not to worry about it, no charge at all! I offered her the 100 euro if she wanted but she said no it was ok and not to worry. Great i had saved 100 euro :D This is Aer Lingus btw.
