I think this is a very good development for both passenger saftey and to tackle false claims against CIE.I know a chap who is on the bus design committee of Dublin Bus and I was talking to him the other day about this, the most interesting thing about the new cameras is they will have one on the front of the bus. This will primary be for accidents ie to use in court, this leads to a few issues would you be entitled to the tape...?

Another thing that is on the long finger so to speek is these cameras are used in other country's to fine motorists who use bus lanes...apparently the info is downloaded every night and the info sent of to the relevant Gov Dept.

So watch out if you are using a bus lane.

It is a good idea. Of course with the amount of carry-on that goes on in some buses, they'll have plenty to watch. We all know of places in the city where nearly every route in and out of it has smokers on it for example. Still, seeing them is one thing, catching them is something else.

My only concerns are who would have access to the material, what it would be used for and how long it would be kept.
Why do I have a feeling the front camera pictures will mysteriously go missing in some accident cases?...

DUBLIN BUS – NEW SECURITY DIGITAL CCTV CAMERAS BEING FITTED ON ENTIRE BUS FLEET

Tuesday 26th July 2005, Dublin – The Minister for Transport Martin Cullen T.D. today launched a new digital security camera system for the Dublin Bus fleet. The new system will replace the current analogue system used on the buses. The fitting of the entire 1062 buses is to take place immediately, with 90% of the fleet to be completed by the end of 2005. The project will cost €2.8million and is being funded by the Department of Transport.

Also speaking at the launch was Dr. John Lynch CIE Chairman who emphasised the important role that Dublin Bus plays for the city saying, “as we speak over 93% of the population of Dublin have access to Dublin Bus services and everyday 70% of all public transport users are travelling on Dublin Bus and because of this we take the responsibility of safety and security very seriously for both our customers and our staff”.

Dr. Lynch acknowledged the great partnership that Dublin Bus has with community leaders and An Garda Siochana in helping to combat anti-social behaviour and vandalism on buses. He thanked Assistant Commissioner Al McHugh who attended the event for An Gardai ongoing support to Dublin Bus.

Each bus will be fitted with up to eight cameras which be placed in the lower saloon, stair well, drivers cab, upper saloon and a camera will also be fitted to the front of the bus looking forward in the direction of travel. Images from each camera are recorded sequentially every two seconds in such a way as to allow all on-bus activities to be monitored. This new system will greatly enhance the quality, coverage and reliability of footage recorded.

Dublin Bus has also produced an educational DVD which features both footballers Andy Reid and Niall Quinn and staff which shows the benefits of Dublin Bus and also shows what happens due to vandalism and anti-social behaviour. This DVD will be shown at schools across Dublin by our bus drivers.
