I'd put a poll up but there are too many options to be honest, so if youy have do get a Fender AMP, which would be your choice? And why?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

ok, one that's easily available! ;)

Ugh, such an impossible question......Twins, Bassmans, Vibroverbs, HotRods, Concerts....there are just too many good ones - i don't know.

Ideally, i'd like an entire wall of Fender amps - one of each. :)

There are usually one or two knocking around ebay. Easy Peasy :D

Easy Peasy is what butchered my credit card, Doc. :p

ok ok, i'll have a look on eBay!

What are the pros and cons of the rest? Obviously i want great clean channel, but i don't want to sacrifice od channel, what's the fender od like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

That depends how much you're willing to spend!

For example, you'll pay through your ass for a fantastic twin that's gonna blow your mind, but you won't get much in the way of OD.

Edit: that's a good deal on the Roc Pro!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

The Roc Pro 700 has a solid state clean channel which breaks up beautifully with the volume at about 3 (it's also incredibly loud at this point) and it has a tube distortion channel, which is delightful. I usually have ample cruch without passing 6 on the gain. Ease the gain back a bit and it has a nice dirty overdriven tone. The Roc Pro 1000 has two gain channels within the distortion channel which are footswitchable. Deadly feckin amp.

Edit -> That's the same as the one I have. Take that dude to the cleaners :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

    it is indeed.

Well i'm willing to go up to €1500, will it really not deliever on the OD side of things, that just sucks

i don't have enough money for that yet, it would be great if i heard one doc, wink wink, you wouldn't have any samples lying around would ya? nudge nudge;);)

No, if you're looking for heavy OD forget the twin. It's simply not designed with massive OD in mind - and tbh, even if you did put in tubes with less gain, i doubt you'd decrease the headroom.

i'd love a bassman meself...but that roc pro is savage dunno get both :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

I have some 4 track demos I did years ago with it... leave it with me, I'll sort something out tonight.

Edit -> No, wait, screw that guy instead!!! :D

you're a star, i'll defo bid on that roc pro 1000, it's needs a bit of work but it doesn't seem major

Is the ROC-PRO a tube amp? I've never played through one. At the moment I'm thinking about buying a fender-blues junior cause the clean channel is cool. And it's really small. I also have a way of getting fender amps at trade price, so it's very cheap...

Also, does john2 still post? He was battling between a twin and a vox ac30 for a while too. 'Daddy' has a sound hire company and has a few twins, a couple of ac30s, deluxes, devilles etc and I was supposed to organise for him to go out and play a few side by side to help decide which he wants.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

    heh, that would be cool!

He does, yeah. I think he was gone for a while, but he's back now.

Edit - oh and congrats to your dad. He's made it on to the GAS raid list. :p

In a perfect world I'd have a few Fender amps and a couple more Marshall's.

I have made a deal with my guitar that when I unleash us on joe public agian it will be with a 4x10 Super Reverb.
Those 10inch speakers SCREAM man. I had always avoided 10 inch before and tried them out by chance on a fender a few years back, amazing, so responsive to your touch.
Its not as 'round and brown' sound as 12inch but you slice through the mix so well.
I would get the bassman but the lack of reverb would be the deciding factor,

Gimme a blackface 4x10 to be a perfect match for my JCM900, I reckon I got most bases coverd with that (maybe a Roland Jazz for when Im chilling)

While Im in bedroom-ville not a cent is gonna be spent on kit (apart from srtings/plecs) So with a bit of luck I'll be shopping by end of September.

Reading these forums is becoming like porn man.

is there any site where i can actually find samples of all these? ENGL have a site but no one else does afaik

Initially i was going to go for the 4x10 DeVille, but decided that it may be a bit too trebly and lacking in bass response. I think that i can get the same result with the Deluxe by just easing on the bass and driving up the mids - the onboard eq is very responsive actually.

LundiMardi - for Fenders you're just going to have to roll up your sleeves and do it the old fashioned way :) Try as many of them as you can - you'll never really be able to capture that quality on a sample mp3.

true.. i want to take a trip up north or across the waters to get it, that way i can try what i want and just bring it home with me!

adding sensible to the gas list would be like adding musicmaker. i think businesses are against the rules. they do have nice stuff in there though. i frequently go in and just play with it for ages. five marshall stacks, three twins, deluxe, deville, roland jc120, 2 ac30s, peavey classic, mesaboogie mkIII combo, jcm900 combo and a load of new ones which I haven't opened the cases of yet. and thats only the amps, the guitars are a completely different story. they're holding some vintage guitars for a friend at the moment and I had a sneaky go of them. a 64 mustang (with a leather scratchplate), a 1952 strat serial number 56, and the les paul from the cover of live and dangerous. ahhhhh. a place dreams are made.

    daram wrote:

Emmm... strats weren't introduced until 1954 (hence last years 50th anniversary models), they didn't even start designing it until 1953

Broadcasters/Telecasters were out at that stage but certainly not strats (nless that one is a lot more rare than we think ;) )

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 631 ✭✭✭daram

Thats what I said. But the guy who owns them insisted it was 1952. He's been a guitar tech for about 25 years so believed him, but who knows.

    http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=2232200000
I've decided this is my amp of choice.

ugh, i'm drooling. But you are wrong to assume that the special operations wing of the GAS squad is concerned with rules and morals. Doc and I would infiltrate the house of an old granny if we heard that she was unwittingly harbouring an old 64 cherry red strat in her attic, wouldn't we Doc? :p

Anyways, daram, that Blues Deluxe RI is a great choice for an amp!

who, what, where!!!!????? A strat (52?hummm...) from that era in Ireland?? wow...Any chance of public viewing??
Was the L&D cover not Phil with his precision?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 631 ✭✭✭daram

honestly, i've never played one. but it can only be better than the blues junior. and tweed amps look so cool. whats the difference between a blues deluxe and a hotrod deluxe. i do all my o/d and dist. with pedals so overdriven channels make no difference to me really. i just want something with a really really sweet clean tone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

Apart from the tweed look and a few superficial bits and bobs there is no difference between the BDRI and the HRD - it's pretty much the same PCB except that the BDRI doesnt have the extra gain stage - the "more drive" function.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

That is as insane as the Mode 4, fey, and the Mode 4 cannot be used by mortals in any normal circumstances. ;)

Daram, this is the most authoritative site for all things HRD and BDRI.

As i said, there are some small differences, but none that would affect you, since you said that you drive the amp through pedals anyways.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Heard a bloke using a Mode 4 one night at a dreadful gig but he was getting a decent enough tone from the thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

I imagine the gig was dreadful coz he drowned out the rest of the band! :p

You really need to turn it up to fill it up though....

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

True. That band played in a tiny pub, I mean about 20 foot to the back wall tiny, with the Mode 4, a double bass drum kit, a 100W Fender and some monster bass amp. Thankfully, I wasn't there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

That's just too much...it's ridiculous, no one needs that much firepower for a pub.

daram, that BDRI would be more than enough to set fire to anyone's hair in a pub, for example - it's that loud. And if it's not - fire your drummer. Simple!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

baggio will justify a 400w amp no bother ...loud mf

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 631 ✭✭✭daram

400W into 4ohms, and it's solidstate. dont be decieved. it's loud yeah, but as loud as would seem. it also probably sounds like ****e. that site is great ancient. love the look of the wooden ones, esp the sunburst. god knows i'd never find one though.

I saw one disappear before my eyes on ebay a couple of months ago :(

Also, make sure you visit the Fender Forums - you'll pick up vast amounts of info on Fender amps.
    There's even a "HRD Club". :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

tbh i'm now gearing towards a Vox AC30CC 212 combo, the fenders do seem amazing but i can't be without my OD, i just can't:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

LundiMardi, don't expect great OD from the Vox either - i mean it's a vox!

Exactly what are you looking for? What do you play?
Wouldn't you perhaps be better off looking for something different altogether - a Marshall? Ask the guys here about the Engl combos - that might be more down your alley i think...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

yeah ENGL combo would be nice, i like playing heavy stuff but i don't see myself playing it in my own band, it's just not 'us'.:)

I don't know about marshall, not a fan of the clean at all, ENGL is what i wanted originally, i was planning on getting a powerball but in truth it's too expensive when you have to get a cab as well. Fender and Vox were the other 2 on my list, that's about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

    Unfortunately you can't have both...

I am sure that the Engl combo provides great cleans as well - imho, that's your best bet - great cleans and plenty of dirt when you need it. You'd be getting the best of both worlds that way.

Who recently got an Engl combo.....freakonaleash?

Not everyone can be Eric Johnson - cleans through priceless vintage Fenders and the dirt through Marshalls.
