Looking at the comments on that site ... haven't Sinn Fein really jumped on this bandwagon (CIIAW, I don't remember them being involved at the very start).

Yeh, I noticed that, and Adams was at their March in Dublin at the weekend.

I'm not in agreement with that, however that shouldn't cloud the real issue.

Can they not free themselves by abiding by the injunction?

Well, I can only speak for myself ... but I admire them for standing up for their principles.

It seems to me that Shell are raping the state of our natural resources, and the government has badly sold short the Irish people on this matter.

Added to the fact that Shell have apparently contravened the planning permissions as well .... I think they deserve credit to be honest.

Now, do gooders may say, that the rule of law has to be upheld, and that the judge has made his decision.

However, I think most sensible people think that the law can be an ass sometimes.....as this is one case in point.

They are plenty scangers and scum walking around the streets at night more deserving of Cloverhill prison than 4 decent people taking a stand against a disgraceful exploitation of our (and yours) natural resources and bulldozing through their village.

Only my opinion ..... but I would suggest that if you do feel they are in the wrong, then maybe spend 20 or 30 minutes on the web looking at the details of the case. I doubt you will have the same opinion afterwards.

I'd agree with what culchie says - going so far as to say that one should draw the distinction between being legally right and morally right; the Rossport 5 are legally in the wrong in that they refuse to obey a court order and have refused to undertake to obey it in the future...

However, if we look at the manner in which the pipeline was sanctioned - Ray Burke signed the resource over to Shell for a pittance (if not absolute zero) back in the 80's. I.e. the state got nothing; how Ray did out of the transaction is anybody's guess. I've also heard (but admittedly can't find a link to back up!) that there was some report drawn up on the environmental impact of the pipeline and it was found to be environmentally sound, until the consultants who drew it up were a bit too close to Shell in the first place. A second report remains elusive...

From what I recall, an injunction is what they call an equitable relief - but the theory is that any person who comes to court seeking such an equitable relief must have clean hands. I'm not sure that Shell are entirely blameless in this matter either - I get the distinct impression that they're riding roughshod over the concerns of the locals, all the while finding it hard to understand why a gang of Micks are being so goddarned Bolshie, as if they should be grateful...

Agreed ... and a gang of Mayo Micks actions created the word 'Boycott' in the dictionary..... for those who would like to look up something interesting at lunchtime ;)

The whole deal is a bent deal, and I think by the time all this is sorted out, and all the details become apparent, these 4 fellahs and their families will deserve deep gratitude from the Irish people.

Sign the petition folks (signature below) , give them a little encouragement, they are fighting for us all.

Not just at the start of the 'free the five' thing - they've been giving about about the project one way or another for... hmm... just a few years now [see Dail records :) - source the Irish Times]

I dont know about anyone else but im pretty fed up with the West Borders and midlands being treated like **** by this Dublin government. When they wanted to build a superdump they tried to build it in my parish. Now they try to shove this unsafe and untested pipeline on county Mayo. If this pipeline was going throughg Dublin I bet all safety regulations would be followed.

I have to admit i found some of the comments on the page amusing to begin with , then jsut maddening.

People claiming that it's dangerous , unplanned and no surveying down.

B0ll0x. There has been, i lost my job from Shell over the continual halts of the project.
I read up on this even after i'd been let go. And now everyone is able to lambast the goverment and Shell over this.

They have had the rights for over 4 years, the planning took a good 3 years as well.

The Rossport5 as they are calling themselves have no one but themselves to blame for this.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, Give a idiot a Microphone and he will be star for as long as he can hold onto it.
