Gumshields anyone?

When training BJJ, I always wear a gumshield but I've noticed that a lot of people don't. I asked Colm about this before but I can't remember what he said, so what I'm looking for is a definitive answer:

Do gumshields actually protect your teeth or are they just shock absorbers, designed to prevent concussion type injuries?

Also, to anyone else who does BJJ, do you wear a gumshield during training?

Gumshields: A) reduce the risk of having one tooth left called gummy joe

    B) reduce the risk of concussion

I would only wear a gumshield in striking.. I've never done so in BJJ.. tbh, I have a habit of not wearing my groin guard in BJJ and am forever making facial expressions of the painful kind.

I always wear a gumshield in all three ranges, for the reasons Clive stated above. Also, it helps reduce the amount of bust lips you get as well!

In our tKD clubs, you're just not allowed on the floor to spar without a gumshield. Even if you have all your other gear, you're not allowed. We don't spar full contact, so I think that the biggest thing it does is prevent busted lips.

I got mine made by my dentist and it fits like a glove. So tight in fact, that I actually have to crowbar it out. However, it means that I'm not half choked by saliva buildup like you get in the mouldable gumshields, and I can also talk coherently while it's in.

However, when I requested it from my dentist, he was surprised, He said that he had a lot of clients who played various sports such as MAs, hurling and so on, and he found that very few of them wear gumshields.

I usually dont bother with one for just bjj, bad things dont tend to happen, but if you're going to be wearing one a lot get a good one. The 3 quid ones from lifestyle sports are as crappy as the price suggests.

I don´t wear a gumshield for BJJ unless someone is going to kneel on my mouth or jump on my head, and since I don´t generally train with assholes, I rarely need it.

nope don't wear a GS. afaik, their major use is when you do get a kick in the face that you don't swallow and choke on your teeth/blood. they will stay in the GS, when you take out the GS, you can do more damage though.
I've a big fan of the 3euro gum shields, there's a shop off o'connell street that sells them. i don't have the "slush slush slush" problem with them either. dental molded gummies are for girls.

Ok, bad things don't tend to happen, but it's happened to me twice in the space of six months where someone's head has smashed into my mouth, bursting my lip. I suppose I'll never know what would have happened had I not been wearing a gumshield.

I really can't believe that so few of you wear gumshields. i bet you all wear cups, so why not a gumshield as well.

Or are you all aiming for the Gummy Joe look?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭✭Clive

BJJ is a very low impact martial art, so the chances of somebody busting your chops is quite low. Soccer has a much higher chance IMO and nobody wears them there either.

I frequently don´t wear a cup for BJJ either.

If you wear gumsheilds and you get used to them and then find yourself in a street fight and youre used to the gumshield youll be in trouble.

This is the problem with not training for REAL street defence.

Yeah well jon you end up fighting on the steret and you'll be in trouble when you think youer wearing a gumsheild but you arent.

anyway when you wear a gumsheild in training you take away 50% of your weapons which are biting and people will think im crazy spitting in your opponents eyes.

and colmOK I never do drugs. drugs are the opposite of the REAL martial artists

I'd never think I was wearing a gumshield if I was in a street fight. Your points don't have much logic. You can train in a resisting enviroment but you still have to keep some level of security, that is why it's called training.

And to be honest, if I'm fighting someone, the first thing I'm going to do is to each get in a clinch with them or take them down and not spit in their eyes or jump on them and start biting them.

As far as biting goes, I hear alot of people use this as a point but people rarely bite in street fights and you're not always able to bite a person. infact, I'd rarely give anyone the chance to bite me.

    hey actually,

i used to play rugby for about 8 years and always wore a gumshield. on occasions i forgot a gumshield or, we were just playing asbout on a field, i found it really unnerving not to have the sensation of having gs in your mouth. it was a distraction.

thats like saying if you get used to training in your bare feet, and someone attacks you on the street, that you'll need to take off your shoes to fight them!

gumshields are for insurance reasons when it comes to contact sports!

though in fairness as kevin says you really notice when you dont have one. I remember forgetting mine for rugby training and I'd feel like my teeth were gonna get smashed in.

thats true!but when you train to defend yourself, you dont do it in sparring!so you shouldnt be wearing one when you train in self defense!so it shouldnt make any difference!

No need to convince me. I've been wearing a Shockdoctor TM since day one.

or SAMBO. my russian judo coached wrestled a bear in the circus. they grapped the bears paws up and put a mussle on him. still a big enough black bear though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

gene fought wrassling bears, that had their claws clipped but they knew a few moves like. i think they later shaved one and called it dan severn

I read recently aobut some karate guy who karate kicked a bear that attacked him and it ran off. He got clawed though, so the bear is claiming the win

A man I knew in Marijampole Lithuania was a sambo man. He was the strongest fighter my eyes have seen. Persons told me that that man fighted a big bear once.
