SBG ground vs stand up?

From what I pick up, training in SBG means training at all ranges, stand up, clinch and ground. In most discussions relating to SBG though, people discuss the ground element most. I looked at the SBG timetable, for Harolds cross before, I think Vale Tudo was only on on 1 night. Is the majority of the training ground work or is there much work done in the kickboxing range?
Anyone know this in relation to the SBG opened in Euphoria?

    Cheers

The lads seem to favour the ground and the clinch, but I've seen them bang, and they can bang just fine.

i'm wondering if the people behind SBG are trying to market SBG as a brand. or even as it's own type of martial art. like Bracie JJ, SBGMA or something.

SBG is a business like any succesful gym. But when you trained at TwoKings how often did you hear SBG pimped or mentioned? SBG is a recognisable brand I suppose and it helps market a training group as having a fairly decent standard (by reputation only).

And its not its own martial art.

I've just realised i'm probably the best qualified to answer this question, and probably should have done instaed of making with the funny.
You definatly right, the vast majority of SBG stuff is ground based. The only "kickboxing" we do is in the sparring classes, and even then takedowns, knees and clinch is allowed. I'd go as far to say that most of the good sbg strikers bring that with them from somewhere else, usually boxing.
After all, who likes getting hit in the head?

    briefly...

SBG training covers the 3 ranges but each gym will have its own 'flavour'. at mine you'll find a strong emphasis towards ground.....as thats my preferred range. at andy ryans place you'll see a lot of clinch.....coz thats his strongest range, and conversly you'll find SBGs that concentrate on stand-up.

tbh, i have to tell the truth, and have to ask what exactly "clinch is". is that not just the bit where you grab the guy and he grabs you, just before one of you throws the other guy?

Clinch is the range where both peeps are standing but there is some grappling contact. Judo minus the ground work is clinch range. When one or more people hit the ground it becomes ground. When both people are standing but not in grappling contact it is standup range eg. boxing.

Hence... Standup, Clinch & Ground being the three ranges that occur in any fight.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm wondering about the balance between covering all 3 ranges, and indulging ones personal flavor. Having ones own flavor, personal preferance and expertise is natural. Yet the value of being competent at all ranges is all understood by most it seems. Does any particular SBG run the risk of neglecting the training of a particular range, or leaving it up to the individual to develop it in their own time. This is the case in most systems anyway.
From what I pick up, there arn't grades in SBG. There are grades in the BJJ part of it though.

Working later so cant make it out to TwoKings these days.

We're running a Sunday 12-2 class in UCD known as Sunday Morning Roll. Its an open mat class so if you wanna pop down its Hall C on Sunday. There's even talk that there might be a thai boxing magician coming on Sunday (like a maths magicians only with thai kicks...)

    patjunfa,

I think competition enforces the need for people to be fully rounded. If people enter the MMA League with great ground and clinch but are unable to close the distance/enter the clinch against committed strikes then it shows up pretty fast.

That is one of the most engaging aspects of MMA competition - you have to be well rounded in all ranges.
When we (Point Blank) started fighting MMA we were basically ground only (except for the Tomahawk of course, not being worried about getting hit let him have a stand up range long before the rest of us!). As time progressed and our opponents got better, being in a situation where we had to rush to a takedown was getting us in trouble, needless to say we went and got stand up coaches to patch that hole in our training. The clinch is a bit of a problem as there isn't a strong wrestling tradition in Ireland, still, training against resisting opponents in the clinch and being intelligent about your training can help a lot there too!

    and indulging ones personal flavor.

    my stand-up is poor
    my clinch is poor
i'm a brown belt in BJJ

....so there might be a reason rather than indulgance as to which range i concentrate on coaching ;)

if people want to concentrate on stand-up then i point them towards the experts eg tonight there is a former Polish boxing champion teaching
if people want to sharpen up their clinch game then i point them towards the experts eg andy ryan regularily teaches at my gym plus we have Zhifco teaching wrestling once a week

personally i think its important for a martial arts teacher/coach to be honest as to what they can and cant coach
Does any particular SBG run the risk of neglecting the training of a particular range, or leaving it up to the individual to develop it in their own time

well we seem to do ok in MMA competition :)
