    Hello all,

Am backing up my 9 series of The X-Files DVD's - they're Region 1. There's 8 discs in each season and am currently trying to rip season 1 - disc 4 and it just won't recognise the disc in my DVDRW drive. Even in 'My Computer' - it shows up as nothing inserted underneath the appropriate drive.

When i first insert it, it whirs up for about half a minute and then just fails.

Put in disc 5 and recognised it fine. Disc 4 doesn't look any worse for wear than the rest of them.

    Any suggestions?

Even a spec of dirt on the DVD can cause this to happen.

Clean the DVD carefully with a clean dry cotton cloth, moving from the inside out to the edge.

    Good luck!!!

But surely if it was die to the ripping app, Windows would still recognise the disc regardless - wouldn't it?

I had a very similar problem yesterday while backing up and converting a R1 disc with DVDshrink...the drive seemed to stall or something.
I ejected it, rebooted and tried again and it worked...but the resulting back-up has freezing and stuttering issues when played on dvd player...dunno how much of it is down to region coding; I have dual drives, both set to different regions. Gonna try ripping and encoding it again later and see if I just got a bad disc...

Thats an odd one alright, the app wouldn't affect it not showing up in 'My Computer'... How about throwing the collection my way and I'll try and 'back them up' for you... ;)

Ripped a couple from the second season with no problems! Feeling it may just affect the first as It did happen me me on one or two of the other discs in Season 1 but when i ejected and re-inserted the disc about 20 times (or so), it did eventually read it! Strange one!

you might try reducing the read speed using nero drive speed or if you are not using it allready try dvd decrypter it normally does the trick if shrink fails
