I spent my entire life wearing cheap plastic watches (had a knight-rider watch for 15 years) but got sick of changing the battery and the straps never seemed to last more than a few months. I bought a shiney new watch almost two years ago now and it's starting to get a bit dull and scratched. Can you get special things for polishing jewelry? I've a feeling I shouldn't get out the emery cloth and start rubbing.

There are various jewelery polishes around but be very careful when applying them to a watch. If it gets near the glass for example, you're in trouble. If it's a mechanical watch and the polish gets anywhere neer the movement, you're really boned. Also, do you know what your watch is actually made of. Is it stainless steel or a cheaper plated material. Some are even "steel" coated plastic. Steel is a bitch to polish but at least you won't go through the finish. If it's gold it's easier to polish, but just as easy to overpolish.

You could try one of those dremel thingys with the buffer attachment, but I'd try some of the bigger jewellers and see what they can do for you. That said, it's Ireland so it probably won't be cheap. I collect vintage watches(my god they tick  ) and the prices they wan't to charge here for a simple cleaning is unbelievable so I carefully go the dremel route.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
