    Hi,

I have two PCs in my house and I have no clue about networking. I basically want to share the broadband from one with the other. Does anyone know what I need to do this (cheapest option please) and how much it would cost?

    thanks

You need to enable something called ICS or internet connection sharing. Do a google for it.

Also you might want to delete/edit out your duplicate post in gadgets.

At the moment im sharing mine between 4 pc's :) . I have gone the wireless option. How far apart are the 2 pc's. If they are close to each other u might wanna go with cable as it is probably a bit easier i think.
People complain a lot about wireless, but mine runs great. Think the main rule is to stick to one brand.

If u went wireless u just need a wireless router and a wireless pci card for the second pc. Its then a case of plugging a cable from the broadband modem to the router and then switching it on. If you have xp on the second pc it will sort the rest out for u :)

You get what you pay for.

Did I quote you somewhere? I said "cheap wireless almost always means crap wireless", not "netgear is crap".

Anyone without any experience using wireless might be tempted to go for a cheap option without checking the make or reading reviews.

Wooot, why didnt those links work of mine  . Stupid cheap website :p . Well i have the tornado brand, if u click on it. I then use the 212g and the 242. Works like a charm. I have an excellent strenght 99% of the day. I also 3 doors/3walls away from the router so i think that amazing :). I would say about 7metres

    Cheapest.

Network switch, enough cat5e to connect the 2 PC's and a crimper with RJ45 plugs as well as wall tacks.
Pretty simple...lay down the cable.crimp it and plug it in....simple.

Borrow a crimper from a friend, a metre of cat5e can be got for 25c(if you know where to look) a box of tacks for a couple of euro.
Switches are dirt cheap for basic models:

    Expensive.
    Wireless!!!

Cable is fine if his pc's are not far apart. If not, laying cable around the house is not very fun.

If you have a modem/router with an ethernet and a usb connection you can share the connection without spending a cent. Once 1 computer has a network card the other a free USB port.

Well I want to go the Wireless way. PCs are about 10-15 metres away, through a floor. Ok so I buy the router and PCI card... how do I fit the PCI card? Do I need to open up my PC?

You will have to open up your PC, clip it into the PCI slot (very easy) and install drivers install drivers. Its very simple.
