Cullen Inspects €31m Kilkenny Ring Road
    19 July 2005

A vital step in improving infrastructure in the South-East- Cullen

Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen td announced today (19th July 2005) that the new €31 million Kilkenny Ring Road will open in May 2007.

He was speaking on a visit to Kilkenny, where work on the new 4.2km carriageway has commenced. The Minister said the road, in taking up to 7,000 vehicles out of Kilkenny City a day, is another significant step for transport Infrastructure in the south east.

Minister Cullen commented : Todays events are very significant for the people of Kilkenny as this is another step in the delivery of infrastructure for the region. Better roads mean a better future. Community life is enhanced through safer road journeys. Businesses can operate more efficiently meaning jobs can grow. Better transport access is pivotal in attracting tourists and this is especially important here in Kilkenny.

The Minister acknowledged the role of his colleagues, John McGuinness and Liam Aylward in the ring road extension. It is a tribute to John, Liam and their Fianna Fáil colleagues on the Council, that we have arrived at this day.

Minister Cullen said at the core of the Governments road programme is an absolute commitment to making sure that we have lasting foundations in place to protect and grow employment in every part of the country.

He said : Investing €150m per month in our road network is not just about delivering shorter, safer and superior road journeys. It is equally about adding personal advantages to peoples lives. Investing €150m per month in roads provides and protects jobs, ensures goods get to the market quicker and allows the regions to prosper. These gains contribute to a better quality of life.

Commenting at the sod turning, Mr. Fred Barry, Chief Executive NRA said: In two years time, the completion of the N77 Kilkenny Ring Road will greatly improve the quality of city life in Kilkenny. The ring road will remove 7,000 vehicles a day from the historic city centre creating a safer and more pleasant environment for locals and its thriving tourist trade. The ring road will also be of enormous benefit to motorists travelling from Kilkenny city to the scenic village of Durrow on the N8.

The roads programme will provide Kilkenny and the South East Region with the infrastructure needed to maximise its commercial potential. The €1bn inter-urban for Dublin to Waterford will revolutionise travel in the region. It will result in shorter journey times, certainty of journey duration and most important of all safer road conditions. The next phase of this route Carlow Bypass will start construction in 2006. This route, as are all the inter-urban routes, being built to a standard that will cater for Irelands traffic needs for many years to come.

That is nothing short of revolting!
Why must a TD make political gain for his party out of a project!

I'm "sure" there were many people on Kilkenny county council
who put in the hours in getting this road through the planning stage,
and for him to pay tribute to only a few of his FF colleagues is scandalous.

It's wrong, because this type of activity could leads to people electing local councillors simply because they are representing FF. This could cause a problem because the candidate representing FF may not be the best candidate, based soley on their ability! We could simply end up with a bunch of gimps.
This annoys me, because my tax is going to build this road, and this road is being used as a publicity stunt, a stunt that may well have negative repercussions for the quality of people's life in that county if gimps are elected!
