hi im a begginer poker player .i got a friend of mine to teach me how to play just a few days ago,im fairly certain i know how to play two card poker which is texas holdem isnt it?but i know im probaly rushing into things but i,d like to try my luck at a poker tournement like the ones that some of you guys here mentioned ,but i dont want to spend 50 euro for entry i do think that this is a bit too much for me to afford,so i was wondering if there is any poker tournements coming up that would nt be too expensive in the dublin area i live in north dublin, and i know i probaly wouldnt put up much of a challenge but i think that it would be a pretty good learning experiance for me,so can anybody help me?thanx

Fitzwilliam card club, single table tournaments, €10 in the early evenings.

All the card clubs run freerolls which are free to enter and you can buy back in for 10 euros if you get knocked out, but you dont win cash you win tickets into the bigger games with cash prizes.

the mayfair run theirs on mondays at 8:30 and sundays at 6pm.

if you check www.antesup.com you will get the info for the merrion and the fitz.

If you do intend in playing in the freeroll, there's a sticky thread at the top of forum which would be a good read for you.

Sugardaddy, I too only learnt to play about 3 months ago, but the freerolls and the €10 STT's are the best way to go. Although the play in the freeroll will be fairly erratic and aggressive, it's a great place to start and learn the way tournaments work and get a feel for them. Its good practice, and when you get better, you'll find that you'll last for longer without needing to re-buy. Good practice, and it's good laugh too.

The best way to learn the basics even before you go to the Fitz or Merrion, is to play for free money on any of the On-line Poker Sites, it will give you the basic set up and feel for how a game flows. In particular try and play any of the STT (Single Table Tournaments or Sit n Go's) which will be more realistic as opposed to the play money "cash tables". This is where I started about 2 years ago and it gives you a great idea of how you like to play without having to worry about not giving anything away to other players that can see you.

Then just fire away and enjoy.

The problem though learning online (from personal experience) with the intention of being a live player means for your first few tournaments you have no idea what string betting, acting out of turn, minimum raise, split pot management etc. are. So you can annoy quite a few people. So the freerolls where people expect that and are generally more leniant towards it would be a better experience.

I agree completely with you, but I just found that if someone at least knows the basic set up then they won't annoy people for those reasons,

Either way they will learn and be told all about string betting, etc. but from the perspective of the beginner I think instead of worrying about all these new rules and etiquette and at the same time trying to find a style of play and a range of starting hands, etc. if they've done the second bit already at home on-line then all they have to worry about is etiquette and rules etc.

However from an experienced player's perspective I'm sure it's preferable to have people coming in completely green, but I don't think they'll come back again if they're cleaned out after 5 or 6 hands. Which could easily happen, as most novices think the whole game is about bluffing.

No-Limit Texas Hold'em by Tom McEvoy, Brad Daugherty is the best book for a beginner. It is part of the New Player series. You can order it here

No - I went to my first one with them last week in Dalymount only heard about it as I am a regular at Dalymount being a bohs fan.

The plus points on the night:
Good Crowd, Mixed Standard, Decent return for winners, Finished by Midnight so I didnt get in trouble with the little lady

    Negatives:
Late Start, advertised 7pm didnt kick off toll 7:45. no dealer until final table

I had a great night as met up with friends I hadnt seen since primary school by accident. believe it or not the 3 of us ended up on the final table and finished 1,2&3.

I got talking to the lads that run it - there was about 5 of them all together runninng the show (turns out I coached 2 of them at Basketball 10 years ago).

I had a chat with the TD after and made some suggestions on how to improve things a little. High hand, celeb player all that fun stuff so hopefully they will introduce them soon. I will be at Hartstown tomorrow so if anyone is going up let me know and we can have a beer before.....
