Where to go in Dublin

I will be in Dublin this August for my 7th time I think, but as I always stay in a small village north of Dublin (Rush, if anyone wants to know), I haven't been out in Dublin yet. But now as they introduced the Nitelink service there is no excuse anymore, so I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good and not to overcrowded place to hang out with friends and have a good conversation.

    Thanks
    Markus

OK, Rush is quite a bit out of town, Nitelink 33N or not. I suspect the last train is before 11 pm.

While I'm not sure about the night life in Rush, Malahide isn't so far away and has a good selection of restaurants with a few pubs thrown in. I'm sure Gibney's still does the occasional gig.

As for the City Centre, cinemas are mostly around O'Connell Street / Parnell Street / Temple Bar. UGC (9 screens - some arthouse), Savoy (6 screens), Screen (3 screens - 50% arthouse), IFC (2 screens - mostly arthouse). The are also cinems at Santry and Coolock (about 9 screens each).

For restaurants, pubs and clubs, the greatest emphasis is in Temple Bar, although the are lots more places now in the vicinity of TB, but not actually in TB. Expect many places to be relatively full and all drinks to be relatively expensive (alcoholics help me out here). TB has, apparently 3 acres of pub / club space. The difference between pubs, clubs and restaurants has diminished substantially.

Pubs are opening just as long and sometimes provide table service, they often serve some food (depends on time of day). Many will have some music, depending on the day of the week. Dancing is generally restricted.

Clubs tend to open later, charge entry, have cloak rooms. They tend to be nicer than pubs, but pubs are improving. The emphasis is on dancing and / or looking good.

Restaurants obviously tend to stick to food (many will have a limited spirits / beer supply, but a selection of wines). Table service is standard, but self choice / self service is becoming more popular. Dancing is generally prohibited.

There is no specific 'theatre district'. There are about eight [n]theatre / music[/n] venues stretching from O'Connell Street to Stephen's Green. The Temple Bar Music Centre and The Olympia are popular with a wide range of music in any given week.

    Well thanks for the Information!

Well, Nightlife in Rush: There is no night life :-)

I think I will check out Temple Bar this year. And go to one of the theatres.

Well, if anyone sees a crazy Austrian guy in an Irish pub or club - You know it's me :-)

There are a number of listings out there - get the Irish Times on Saturday or Tuesday.

Or just have a look at the http://www.ireland.com/ site, there's a lot of info online too.

I live in Donabate meself, I usually get the 33N home or stay with mates in town (much better option). I wouldn't really recommend Malahide (the pubs are great) but you may as well go into town if you're going to Malahide (taxi will still be at least £15 quid home).

Just make sure you score in the club, that'll provide a nights accomadation smile.gif
