So i've been planning to go back to college this coming year to study something computer related full time or preferably part time. So far i've been looking at part time dips/degrees. Since i have absolutely now experience in the IT industry then i figured jumping straight in this kind of 3/4 year course would be pointless since I would probably be working crappy non computer related job until i got a qualification.

So the other route as far as i can see is going down the A+,N+,MCSA,CCNA etc road. I found a great course which is a year long and takes in all the qualifications just mentioned but the fee is around €6000  I was looking at the fas ecolleges thing but i'm not so sure about that, i think i need to be in a classroom enviroment to get anything done.

I would to love to hear other peoples experiences advise of getting started in the IT industry. Cheers

Probably your best bet is do a course with FAS. You get paid, fees are covered, and you actually work with hardware rather than reading about it. They have a lot of IT courses; programming, web design etc. I did the A+ with them and hav'nt looked back. They also get work experience in companies (which may lead to full-time employment) and sometimes get job offers aswell.

Anyone know what the MSIS course at Trinity is like ? It's only about 50% computers but I know a girl who did the course and went straight into a €70,000 a year job...

We all know someone who got the dream job...shame its always someone else!!!

Stay away from Electronic Engineering(wish I did) as they try and cram in too much in too little time and are being forced to modify the courses to Master status and 5 years in length as 4 years and 6months of Co-Op is just not cutting it!!!

Go with FAS as its a springboard to something better if your grow an interest and actually being payed for attendance and not given the equiv of half the dole would be more of an incentive!!!

Are you sure it is IT she's in and not something, ermm, in a different industry? ;)
I'd go back to college for that myself. Do you have any details at all on the course?

This sounds just like what i'm looking for but i'm not really sure exactly what the story is with the fas website. The only thing i could find in relation to doing it courses was the ecollege section and you have to pay to do that one? How did you go about it?

I'd say the 50% that is computers is probably 20% of the wages! what was the other half of the course? Study that.

Spent 5 years studying computers ... didn't find it very usefull going back to study something completely different.

Is this the part-time on - BScMIS? or MSISS full-time? I did the BScMIS Part time and felt that it was an excellent course. Tough going though over the four years but worth it in the end. Headed on to do the MSc then after. The time when studying part-time flies by as it is broken into 5 weeks week off 5 weeks Christmas 5 weeks etc. The only problem is studying in May for exams when everyone else is in the pub.

If you want to know more info on it youcancallme>al send me a PM.

Nope you don't have to pay. I did it in Loughlinstown (Dell were sponsoring it at the time). Just pop in and have a chat with them. There might be a waiting list but I think they give preference to people umemployed, back to work scheme and all that.

MSIS - Management Science and Information Systems. Theres stuff bout it on the trinity site. Its management, basic computer science, statistics, databases. I think the kidn of work it leads to is running studies for companies, reports on how they could decrease costs or other things.

the girl who got the super high paying job was head hunted during 4th year, along with the rest of the class as far as I know. 100% employment coming out of it, although theres something like 22 places a year. It's been over 500 points before, not sure what it's like now, 450-500 i think. Strongly considering it just for the possible giant sack of money!

Can you do the Fas courses for free/get paid for them while you are still in secondary school?

Just one thing to add to this:

A lot of larger companies (usually american corporations) wont let you do certain jobs without a degree. You can do diploma / degree route too.

I went to DIT Kevin Street and did a diploma then degree (1 extra year). AFAIK, they do a part time course in the evenings. Check their website.

I know two people who have done this (and qualified with firsts) and haven't landed no 70k dream jobs.

Are 6month CO-OP's part of this course???
Without some sort of work experience the 70K wage straight out of college in any course is a dream!

I still remember the first couple of months of my work placement...didnt have much of a clue and felt like a 3rd leg.
Someone with a first without work experience is of no real use to anyone for the first couple of months.

    Hi youcancallme>al,

I would reccommend an A+/N+ course with FAS...which I am cuurrently attending in Loughlinstown.

I have sat the A+ Hardware part already and passed. Just started the software section. The instructor is excellent and knows his stuff!

Without at least an A+ qualification, employers don't want you! Nowadays you must have a basic working knowledge of computers, both hardware and software (OS), a must for tech support at least.
