BBC news is reporting they were only deternators that went off.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4703777.stm

Still going to cause chaos though.

I think it was a bunch of lads who didn't know what they were doing.
Apparantly the bombs in question didn't have any explosives, only detonators.

I heard on the radio (RTE radio 1) at lunchtime a nail bomb had gone off....

I think what they are suggestion is that the detonators went off but the rest of the explosive didnt.

It'd be rare for that many detonators to not trigger an explosion though. I'm no explosives expert though.

Apparently some punter was seen running from the train by other passengers.

There were incidents at 3 underground stations and one on a bus. Eye Witness seen a bag blow up on a train he was on, it was a rucksack being carried by some guy. The witness said the guy holding the bag looked shocked when it was forced open by a small explosion. no confirmed injuries. (seen all this on sky news at lunch)

Not that rare when it comes to homemade stuff.

Did he get lynched? I'd say most suicide bombers look surprised after they press the button and are still there.

Hopefully its nothing more than messers.

    From http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1189833,00.html :

Victoria Line train passenger Ivan McCracken told Sky News he spoke to an Italian man who witnessed an explosion just after the train arrived at the platform.

"He told me he had seen a man carrying a rucksack which suddenly exploded. It was a minor explosion but enough to blow open his rucksack. Everyone rushed from the carriage. People evacuated very quickly. There was no panic.

"I didn't see anyone injured but there was shock and fright.

"There was a smell of smoke."

"The man who was holding the rucksack looked extremely dismayed."

One witness told Sky News that passengers tried to prevent a man with a rucksack running away but they failed.

Police have cordoned off the streets around Warren Street station. Sky reporter Mark White said: "Police activity suggests that they are looking for somebody on the outside here."

Bombers have again targeted London's transport system - with up to four explosions reported.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said the bombs appeared to be smaller than used in the attacks two weeks ago but advised people to "stay where you are".

Passengers reported one blast at Warren Street station off Tottenham Court Road in central London.

There has also been an incident on a bus in Hackney, East London.

Stations at Warren Street, Oval and Shepherd's Bush have been closed.

Scotland Yard have confirmed there is an incident involving armed police officers at University College Hospital in Bloomsbury near Warren Street station.

Men in chemical protection suits have been seen appearing to enter Warren Street, where British Transport Police say one person has been injured.

Services on the Victoria, Northern and Hammersmith & City and Bakerloo Lines have been disrupted. The Victoria Line has reopened on either side of

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair described the incidents as serious and advised people to stay where they were.

Emergency services started receiving calls just after 12.30.

At Warren Street there were reports of shots and a nail bomb explosion. Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said police believe this may have been the sound of detonators going off.

"The man who was holding the rucksack looked extremely dismayed."

One witness told Sky News that passengers tried to prevent a man with a rucksack running away but they failed.

At Oval station there were reports of a man dumping a rucksack in a carriage then fleeing as the doors closed.

Police cordoned off the streets around Warren Street station. Sky reporter Mark White said: "Police activity suggests that they are looking for somebody on the outside here."

Scotland Yard said emergency services responded to an "incident" on a Number 26 bus in Hackney Road, on a junction near Colombia Road, east London.

Bus operator Stagecoach said the driver heard a bang at around 1.30pm.

The bus had left Waterloo and was in Shoreditch when the incident happened.

"The driver heard a bang which appeared to come from the upper deck. When he went upstairs to investigate, the windows on the upper deck were blown out.

"The bus is structurally intact and we don't have any reports of injuries," said a spokesman.

Sky News Foreign Affairs editor Tim Marshall said: "There is nobody anywhere near the bus. This does indicate that police think it is still dangerous."

Sky News Online's Rob Cole is at Shepherd's Bush. He said: "The whole of Shepherd's Bush Green is sealed off. About 400 metres on both sides of the Tube station is affected."

Network Rail say all mainline train services are running from London stations.

It is two weeks to the day since bombers attacked three Tube trains and a bus in central London.

Wearing chemical hazard suits? Did they do this last time??
Hope it aint a chemical or biological attack, might explain the lack of large explosive.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 8,679 Mod ✭✭✭✭Rew

They do that as a precaution every time.

two weeks ago they were initially saying that there were 5 train bombs & 4 buses blown up, a lot of the "evidence" so far is from anonymous souces or people who were talking to other people.
    hope nobody is injured though.

Or perhaps a rushed attempt at a second bombing. Possibly they had these planned for much later in the year (say when the kids went back to school), saw how the British Police were kicking their asses and arresting some of their key guys, panicked and moved their schedule forward. Then they possibly had to hack their bombs together as they didn't yet have all the parts, resulting in what we saw today.

In any case, I don't think we'll be given a clearer view of what/why until after the weekend.

They're a bunch of idiots. No, not for killing innocent people, but for not being able to blow up a subway train full of people.
    Instructions:
    - get bomb
    - put in rucsack
    - bring to train
    - detonate

Why do they keep calling these guys masterminds ? And planners ? It doesn't take much.

This event also goes to show that nothing will stop "terrorists" if they want to do something. Nothing. Increased security and alertness is out the window to be honest.

Armed police also searched a nearby hospital and a man (claimed by sky news) to be wearing a large coat and who was naked underneath was arrested by Armed Police at Downing St..

Sometimes I wonder if the media is a good or a bad thing.

Sometimes I wonder if the media is a good or a bad thing.

Hah - funny you say that; was at home at lunchtime and the brother had the telly on and said "It's kicking off in London again". He was watching Sky News. I whipped the controller from his hand and slapped the Red button to get the 24 hour BBC news working on the notion that SKY will trot out any aul ****e 'it's been reported that there was a nail bomb', 'one source says there was a fire bomb', 'one eye-witness said it was Shergar' etc. All completely deniable, but guaranteed to keep you watching which is good for advertisers.

Remember folks - it's all about the benjamins!

BBC, on the other hand, now that they have the 'we don't run the story until we're pretty friggin' sure of its veracity' tends to be more of the 'London Ambulance have confirmed that there are no casualties at any of the stations'

    Not at all..

Consider the person who was on the subway and his detonator only went off.. He ran away.. Do you really think he has not been caught on about 100 security cameras and will be picked up within days?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,082 ✭✭✭lostexpectation

that they said sooooooo little about the people who did this there must be four of them, the guy on tv looked like a unfortunate passer by, they said very little about what went on in the hospital and who that guy is?

Why? Because the Western Governments want you to believe that the terrorists are "highly sophisticated" to give the public an extra level of fear and terror, so they allow the Governments to do all in their power to stop them.

It gives them even more reason to take a very heavy handed approach when bringing in new anti-terrorism policy at home and abroad (including action in Iraq and Afganastan... and any new potential targets).

Indeed whiskeyman, except for possibly the war part ...

Then in the next newscast Blair comes on telling Londoners to "remain calm". lol?

True. The wealth of evidence they have for this attempted attack will prove vital in tracking down the bombers and in possibly disrupting any further attacks by others against British targets.

However, yesterdays bombers could end it all just like the Madrid suspects did when cornered by Spanish police.....

Imagine the looks on their faces...press the button; expect to arrive in heaven, welcomed by Allah and the seventy Virgins and find that apart from a bit of a bang, nothings happened, and worse still, you're still in friggin' Hackney...

One of yesterdays bombers was shot dead on a tube this morning by police. He may have beeing going for a 2nd attempt. They seem to have identified yesterdays bombers quite quickly.

    A Possible Sucide bomber? http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1189920,00.html

It's amazing how BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4706787.stm can tell the story so calmly while Sky have to jump to conclusions once again. Time will tell.

Goes back to what I was saying tho'; the view from BBC Central tends to be that there's less chance of looking like an idiot if you have to 'climb up' from your old position to the actual facts as they emerge, rather than 'climbing down'.

i.e. "it may have been a suicide bomber" - becoming "it was a suicide bomber with known links to xyz, under surveillance from last June"

    compared with
"it was a mad raghead with severe psychopathic tendancies who was hell-bent on mutilating potentially hundreds" becoming "it was a faredodger who had a backpack"

Suspects? Sky News is certain of it... they are certainly wanted in connection with the "bombings" anyway...
