Right I have settled on the EOS350d (digital rebel in the US) and Im looking for places to get the black one cheap with the lens kit, the best price I can find so far is 600STG but Im sure I could do better. So basically Im looking for help as to where to get it.

You can get it here for €772 + shipping.

    Technik Direkt

Looks like a nice camera, want to get one myself at some stage. Have to start taking more photos to justify the expense though!

Yea thats a good price, I already have a list of shots I want to take with it as long as my arm, it will hopefully be the first camera I will own that will do all the things it claims to do, first one I had, got 15mins tops out of the battery and the worst lag time I have ever seen.

If anyone else can beat the €772 I would love to hear about it.

    Best price so far is

499yoyos. Anyone able to tell me if these people are any good, they seem legitimate enough but not had too much of a look into them.

with a price that low, something has to be wrong. Get it from Technik. I got my 20D from there, great service.

I think the american version has less features anyway, plus you'll be caught for customs if you buy that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

well.. yes, unless the seller is sympathetic to your wallet and by some travesty of scibbling marks the customs label with the incorrect amount..

I don't know exactly but I've seen it on the Canon site and if you search ebay you'll see them all saying "This is the full UK version, not the Rebel XT"

It's probably only one or two small things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭JackKelly

Apparently there are some very small differences in the versions. As in , a few features missing. Not sure exactly what they are.In europe its the 350d , in america its the "Rebel XT" and in Japan its the Kiss Digital.
Apparently its like the differences between a lexus and a toyota....not much.

I'm planning on getting the same camera myself. It's so damn expensive though. I was thinking of getting someone in america to get it there and bring it over.(if they are visiting). 772 and shipping isn't bad. It retails at 995 here in rip of Dublin.

Edit: If you look on Ebay, you can get one new for just over 700. Like here.
It's from Hong Kong though. They say
    Customs Handling

    • Upon customer request, we will gladly declare the unit as "gift of no commercial value" or in other terms for easy clearance. However, taxes are the ultimate responsibility of buyers. We will try our best to minimize your risks on tax.
    • In fact, we may handle all customs issues, if any, directly. Customers please don't answer any queries without our advice.

I don't think I'd buy one off ebay. They kind of remind me of those dodgy shops in the Canaries. It's too much money for me anyway to be spending on ebay. Did you know that the one above is just the body, no lens? That makes it quite expensive.

BTW There's a Canon Outlet store on ebay.co.uk where you can get "refurbished" cameras for as little as half price in some cases.

They've got a lot of 300Ds on sale lately and they're going for around £400stg.
Worth a look. I got an EOS 33v SLR for €200.

Did they mind shipping it to Ireland? Says UK only, I know most small timers in ebay will sort you out anyway, but maybe these guys would rather ignore you ...

rob, they don't mind shipping to Ireland. Just ask them first. There seems to be a few different people working there so your mileage may vary.

I think the american version has less features anyway

they are identical apart from the name on the front, everything else is identical.

you will need a US to Ire plug apdapter to use the charger is the only addition.
I've bought all my EOS gear from B&H in New York by internet ordering

Theres a 300d refurb there for ~320E W/ a kit lens. Now that seems like a excellent deal considering the worst that could have happened to the camera was that it was used in a trade show! Heres the link. Is there a catch or something? I suppose the bids will bring it up as it goes on.

Whats more is they are as official as you will get on ebay. I wonder do they do 350d refurbs

Cameras are starting to seem far too expensive for me at the mo, so i might give them a go when i get the money going.

The 300D auctions usually end at around the 400-450 mark. Still not too shabby. You can use ebay sniper to win the auctions.

Refurbished means all the cameras have been quality tested and repackaged. You get everything with it. I'd imagine there's absolutely nothing at all wrong with the 300Ds. Seems to me like they're just trying to get rid of old stock.

I've been keeping an eye on it over the last few months, I've never seen a 350D there.

DotOrg, they may be exactly the same, I'm not 100% sure. I've just seen it mentioned that there are differences.

I bought a black 350D in Andorra for €720 about two weeks ago. The salesman swore that I wouldn't have any problem with customs as they were only interested in Spanish people smuggling booze and cigarettes. When I got to the Spanish border the guys were searching every car so naturally I declared the camera and paid VAT @16% in cash (they wouldn't take plastic). I'll never believe another salesman (BTW he was French).
I just got back from holidays yesterday and I'm loading the photos on my PC at the moment. I'll probably post some for your views!

Could you not just wrap it around your neck and say you brought it from home?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 109 ✭✭dublinguy05

Joolsveer, you declared it at customs, are u mad??? and you believed a sales person in a shop....you should have dumped the box and carried it through

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭JackKelly

yea. Im pretty sure that if you put on that you'd brought it from home they wouldn't have said another word. Flatpack the box and put it in the luggage. Or even throw it out.

Well I was driving the car when I was stopped so if I had put the camera around my neck it would have been a bit of a give away.

they are exactly the same. i have a 350D and if you read the reviews etc on dpreview.com you'll see that all canons are the same just named differently for the europe/US/japan markets
