Heres a quick one for those of you that know more than me! I have a PIII 450MHz and I'm looking to put in an 80Gb disk. Has anyone any input on this before I buy? I'm just wondering if it'll be limited to 37GB or not and will I need to buy a PCI controller card as well?

    Any help is appreciated!

    Cheers

Think theres a reg hack so windows will see the rest. Something to do with 48 bit address or somit like that?

check your BIOS for the most recent update, if any!

only one way to find out really!!!

but it maybe just as quick to buy the controller card also. 2 channel card and 80GB drive from komplett will cost 90 euro incl postage to Ireland.

Even if the drive works on the mobo controller, you could shift the card in For Sale section on boards.ie.

    my 2cents, Dara.

    Should be fine!

Though the 80Gb be not operate at full speed due to the age of the computers CPU.

There should be no problem as the 37GB problem had already been encountered when the P3 was released...the 120GB barrier might prove a problem though.

Thats cool guys, cheers for all the input. Not too worried about the 137Gb barrier, for now anyway! PC is a gateway as well and it seems they're not too forthcoming with support for older machines! I'll give it a shot without the interface card for the moment and if things get hairy I'll just fork out the extra €20 odd! Cheers

True, but it was the hardware issue I was worried about. Cheers all the same.

Make sure the BIOS on your motherboard has the latest firmware update. In case the BIOS does not read all of the drive.
