    Hi,

Earlier today I managed to connect at 49bps on my 56k modem. This is a rare thing for me-usually its 48bps. Id like to always be able to connect at 49 or a higher number but it never seems to happen. Is there anything I can do to tweak my modem so it connects at its fastest?

    Thank you.

I think it all depends on your line quality, but it's pretty rare to get over 50kbps... then of course you've got the 52k/53k (?) cap on speeds anyway.
Hardly worth thinking about really, just get ISDN or something tongue.gif

Find the latest drivers you can for the modem, my Lucent Winmodem used to only connect at 48k until installed the latest drivers from the Lucent website, now its always 53.2k on NTL and 52k on Indigo,

Use a shorter modem cable..do not use splitters adapters..do not pass go..do not collect £200 etc..

    Deselect "log on to network"

Get a hardware modem, preferably a quality one like a USR (some people swear that they connect at higher speeds on noisy lines than software ones)

I suppose it helps that i'm on the "North Main" exchange too...move house

Thats all i can think of smile.gif

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

I had one of these little b'stards and it reported similarly high connection speeds to TINET in Galway. However, the error rate on the modem was terrible (CRC and alignment errors) and the resulting actual throughput was quite poor. I replaced it with a hardware modem and although the connect speeds are now in the mid-40's the effective speed is higher. I'm not saying this is the case for you, but it might be. I don't know how you'd measure the error rate in Win9x but it's easy in Win NT as it shows up on the Dial Up Networking control panel when you're connected.

the higher your connection speed, the more dodgy your connection will be. for browsing and dl'ing thats not really a problem, u want the highest speed possible, but for games its exactly what you don't want. if you've a 56k modem, try limiting your connection speed to 40000bps, and then give it a good test while games playing over a couple of days, on diff isps. if your getting a better con that you would normally, try moving the speed up a bit, and retest. i know when i was on a modem i had it normally limited to 42000bps, and got very steady cons with low pings (alot of people thought i was on isdn due to me pinging 90-120ms). my pace modem also helped smile.gif

The difference is immaterial, seeing as you are not up/downloading every second that you are logged on.

No matter what new modem you get or what tweaks you make, your connection will only get a few percentage points better.

Your next choice is to go to ISDN (2 x 64k lines) or wait for the roll-out of DSL.

Kill, kill, kill the laser mice.
