zyxel iol modem problems with wireless router

we bought a netgear wireless router but with no integrated modem so we needed to use the iol modem and the new router together. i set the iol modem to bridge mode and configured the netgear to PPPoE and it autodected the Primary DNS etc. i also put in the username and password. the internet worked fine and i could port forward to bittorrent etc but i cannot open any udp ports. also when i click to stream a video in windows media player it wont stream with the default settings because wmp uses udp ports.
if i plug the iol in routing mode directly into my computer, udp ports works fine.

so we figured the new netgear was defective.

so i bought a 3com router with no integrated modem and it still doesn't work. am i configuring something wrong or what?

It's probably down to the ZyXEL modem being a sack of crap... Save yourself some trouble and find a second hand eircom wireless modem, the netopia one. They're a nice piece of kit compared to the iol crapola

well has anybody got an iol modem to work with a wireless router. i can't return the netgear modem so i would like it to get to work right.

I'm using a Linksys wireless router with the zyxel and it works fine. No configuration was required on the zyxel at all. You don't need to set it to bridge mode - just plug it all together and it's fine.

if you see my thread "wireless router help please" iv had the same problem for the last few days.
got everything working now didnt need to change any settings on the zyxel modem but i did switch it to bridge and i lost my connection so id say keep it at routing.
id say your best bet would be to go to the netgear website and see if live thay have live chat support thats what i done with my linksys router and the agent walked me through it in no time.

Try searching boards i know that the ZyXel modems are sh!te alright have seen a few probs with them. Have one and linksys gear bout 5months and played with it for ages and couldnt get it working proper so left it. Must try again just dont have the time. Came across a funny setting in the ZyXel modem "allow another modem connect through this one" or summit. In work so will check later. My main prob was the http address were the same:mad:

Macros can you please PM me your config and il try again later. What a waste  cheers

the problem with changing it to routing mode is that you have to port forward on both routers which isn't much of a problem for me i guess because it is only a minutes work.
i changed it to routing mode.
The settings for the Zyxel are as follows
    Routing mode
    encapsulation PPPoE
    Multiplex LLC
    VPI 8
    VCi 35

the internet works fine through this now directly through the modem as it always did.

so i plug that into the 3com and set it to 192.168.0.1 as it says it was conflicting with the modem after i changed the IP Allocation mode to Dynamic IP address instead of PPPoE.

Both computers can connect to the internet just like before but udp ports still don't work even if i specically forward them.

I believe this Zyxel to be defective.

To Macros42 or anyone else who is using a zyxel and a wireless router, can you stream windows media player videos when only udp ports are enabled in tools/options/network?

also if you could post your config here or pm me too?

Don't put the Zyxel in bridge mode, put the wireless router in bridge mode.

I have the Zyxel router and a Belkin wireless router set up and working fine. I left the Zyxel address at 192.168.1.1 and all the settings needed to work on it's own. Then set the Wireless router to be 192.168.1.2 and switch off it's DHCP function. I didn't configure any port forwarding in the wireless router, I think it's in bridged mode, so it just forwards everything from the DSL router to the wireless network.

Configure NAT on the Zyxel to forward the relevent UDP nad TCP ports to the PC's IP address, 192.168.1.33, and everything works fine.

is there another name for bridge mode because i cannot find it in the 3com config?

Beware of putting those Zyxel Prestiges into bridging mode, it seems to result in very odd behavior.

I did it with the intention of using a machine here for pppoe, nat and a firewall. It worked perfectly fine for a couple of days but then it dropped out completly, I had to do a hard reset on the zyxel and switch it back to routing mode. Not sure what it could be - I've seen some devices configured as bridges running out of memory or other resources after random periods of time, but usually only on very busy networks with lots of broadcast traffic and such.

yesterday when i put it back into routing mode, it kept hanging on web pages and crashing. the zyxel is pure cr*p

That's a bit harsh vishal - It's a basic modem but it works fine for me and a lot of people I know - with and without wireless routers attached.

tell me this, if you enable Universal Plug and Play on the zyxel modem and you log out of the config, can you log back in? maybe i have a defective one, because there is no reason that the udp ports shouldn't work because i have tested both a 3com and a netgear with the modem and both have the exact same problem.

Hey jor el, I'm having a lot of trouble with my setup. It's as you have above, BT ZyXel Prestige and Belkin Wireless Router, but I can't get them to configure. I have the ZyXel set-up in routing mode and PPPoE and it's working fine when connected straight to the laptop.

Problem is, when I try to configure the Belkin using 192.168.2.1, I can't access it (prob because router is not connected!). So I need to unplug the ethernet cable from the laptop and back into the Belkin, and Belkin into laptop. Then I try to configure but I reckon I'm not doing things right because I can never get a connection to the internet. I have to unplug all again and go back to direct ZyXel to laptop connection to access net.

I'm at a complete loss here
