Dublin Jellyfish

Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council has erected signs at four of the most popular swimming areas in south Dublin because of the presence of dangerous jellyfish in the water.

The council is advising people to stay out of the water and has erected signs to that effect at Seapoint, Sandycove, the Forty Foot and Killiney beach.

Three people were treated in St Michael's Hospital in Dún Laoghaire yesterday for jellyfish stings.

Ruined my weekend they did - went as far as Greystones to find a 'clear' place to swim. Any on the Northside? - not a fan of Dollymount bit desperate times...

Anyone know what type of jellyfish they are?

It didn't seem to stop a lot of people on Saturday swimming in the Forty Foot or at Sandycove. Didn't see much mention of the type of Jelly fish in the paper but heard that they can be quite big - 6ft wide with over 50ft tentacles. Obiviously you can swim with out seeing the jellyfish but can still be stung, quite badly. There are found types found around the area at the moment - 2 are very dangerous and two are not.

Didn't think that the signs were in a good place either - I managed to pass four of them without noticing.

I'd rather stay safe and not swim there myself. Also saw four rats having a nice swim in Sandycove on Saturday afternoon. Rather semed to be enjoying themselves and unaware of the dangers in the water.

They ruined my saturday too....started off in Killiney, then moved to Sandycove....eventually admitted defeat & headed North to Dollymount

I've never actually been there, but by all accounts Dollymount strand is an absolute kip. Head a bit further North, although alot of the beaches are a bit off the Dart line.

Apparently all is Ok when the tide is in - the problem is in between tides.

Here's a site that will give you tide times:

The lifeguards get 150cc quads to chase joyriders on Dollymount too.... hardly a good sign.

Nah, there are better. Portmarnock gets too busy tbh. I worked on tower bay last year, just beside Portrane. In the middle of nowhere, but if you have a car it's a great little beach. Fairly well protected from major currents too. We saw very few jellyfish at all last year when Donabate and Portmarnock were overrun with them.

Sutton beach is lovely and quite. It'a bit difficult to find and bad parking so that's why. Not really far off the Dart line though. Mind you I hate swiming in the sea

Anyone know if the warning is still in effect, I fancy a dip!

/edit - was down at seapoint yesterday, no red flag, no warning signs but maybe that was because the lifegaurd was not on duty. Went in for a dip anyway along with several others.

    No problems!

Why isn't there a sea swimming website? Surely some of the sea racers want to know too - about safe places, dangerous currents, j'fish, places where it's safe or not to leave your stuff, places where you can bring the dog or not, etc.

What beaches are the jellyfish swimming at now? They were certainly in Sandycove and the Forty Foot last weekend.

Are they in Skerries, does anyone know?

We managed to still keep on swimming as my friend has his own harbour in his estate. We saw one of the 'Lions Mare' jellyfish but it was well out of the way. The only ones that were around were the see through ones which, as far as I've been told, don't sting you.

I ****ing hate jellyfish. They scare the crap out of me; the thought of getting caught up in its tentacle and not knowing where to go......ugh....
