West/ East Village Manhattan?

    Hi,

I will be spending 5 nights in New York in September & am looking at apartments to rent as they appear to be a lot cheaper than hotels.

So far, I've been offered two similiar studios for the same price - The first is on Charles in the West Village & the second is on 7th street in the East Village beside Tompkins Square Park.

I've never been to NY before so I'm not familiar with these areas. The tour guides aren't much use in a compare & contrast way so can anyone advise as to which might be better. I'm in my early 20s & will be there with a friend so we want to be somewhere lively with good bars & easily accessible by public transport.

Let me know if anyone has any views as to which would be a better location or if it doesn't make much of a difference.

    Thanks
    Rachel

    Rachel,
Both the west and the east village are cool places with plenty of bars and fun stuff to do... Upper East Side is AWESOME, but very expensive... you should have lots of fun... I'm surprised that you found an apartment to only rent for 5 days... usually they require more than that amount of time, but go for it!! you'll have fun... .whenver I go up to the city(which is only about an hour from me), I usually go to the east village.... have fun!!! hope I helped...

I think I may go for the place in the East Village.

I found a lot of short stay apartments on Craig's List. Very reasonably priced as well although from the pictures they look fairly basic but I don't plan on spending much time in the studio.

    Thanks for the help!

The Tompkins Square place will be a good location. The square used to be pretty rough, and still holds a bit of fear for the overly cautious, but it's been pretty yuppified over the last ten years or so. Tompkins is filled with dog walkers and fake punks these days.

You'll be at the bottom of St Marks Place, which hasn't got much to recommend it any more, but looks suitably boho. Head south of Delancy St. for the best 'happening' part of the neighbourhood - the lower east side.

You'll have busses running beside you, but will have to walk up to Astor Place for the subway (not a long walk).

I was surprised too. Hadn't considered it until I saw the price of hotels. They're so expensive, although it's to be expected considering it's just after peak season and New York. In comparsion, a three star hotel in New Orleans is costing three of us $70 each for four nights!

There appears to be a huge market for holiday rentals of 3-7 days in New York because of the price of hotels and I guess it's a handy couple of $100s to be made.

Could you tell us more about this list?? If it gets you deals better than the New York Hotels i would love to give it a glance.

    Thanks!!
