Whats involved in unlocking my phone?

I wanted to know what do i have to do to unlock my phones. I have a Sony Ericsson T610(vodafone) and a t290i(meteor). the questions i want to know are Do i have to bring to them one of the operators shops? or can i just ring the operator? Are there any costs involved? Thanks for the help.
