    It will play DivX avi's, not sure on other codecs though, think it states what it will play on the website.

    * Integrated Dolby Digital 5.1 Decoder
    * DIVX/MPEG4 compatible for playback of downloaded movies (DIVX, 3, 4, 5 and VOD Video)
    * Compatible with DVD, Super VCD, VCD, CD, MP3, CD-R, CD-RW, Kodak Picture CD, MPEG files DIVX
    * Progressive scan video out
    * Multi-region
    * Compatible with PAL/ NTSC/AUTO system
    * Full functional infra-red remote control
    * Dynamic screen saver function
    * High horizontal resolution: 500 TV lines
    * 54MHz 12bit D/A video conversion
    * 96KHz 24bit D/A audio conversion
    * Includes scart lead
    * Multi-view angle, zoom function.Size: 400 (W) x 38 (H) x 230mm (D)
    * Colour: metallic silver

    For 50 quid, you can hardly go wrong, if it played xvid, it would be a no brainer

    Lidl also have one like the Aldi unit from time to time for €59 here , but it also has a 6 in 1 memory card reader built in, both are first class bargains.

    Depends where you go I think.

    So will this definitely not play xvid or is there a chance it will. Sorry don’t know enough about codecs and stuff.

    Also is there a way to update the player if updated divx codecs come out?

    Chances are that as-is, it won't play xvid.

    IF new firmware is released, there is the potential to enable to player to play xvid, but this same principle could apply to any existing DVD player...

    Can someone please provide a link to the player. I cannot for the life of me see it on the Aldi site. Thanks. :)

    Just to answer my own question. It's available from THURSDAY (not Monday). Link here ;)

    Xvid is 50-50. Mate has a DivX player that also plays Xvid.

    All divx players play Xvid i have had 3 and they all do without firmware upgrades.

    Philips dvp 630, tevion and a goodman all played it no problems.

    The only format you will have issues with is KVCD.

    i think the goodmans is the best divx player. my bruv has one and it plays absolutley everything he throws into it. they were sold in tescos last xmas i belive with the surround speaker set for 99 yo yos (brilliant deal).

    i got the lidl one myself there about a month ago and its pretty good only youve to worry about packed bitstream (discussed in other forum).

    if anyone knows of those goodmans being sold anywhere could they let me know

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,807 ✭✭✭chump

    Yea lidl is great once you get the packed bitstream sorted out...

    But does the goodmans and other players work without unpacking this?

    And what about pause, rewind etc... The lidl player can be a bit "jumpy" ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭HOB-it

    yeah i notice when i pause on the lidl player it takes maybe 10 seconds to catch up with itself after you unpause. video and sound out of sync for that time but its a small complaint. i can easy live with it. the biggest pain is the packed bitstream which i solved using a small programe i downloaded but it meant re-burning to disc.

    as far as i know the goodmans suffers from the pause problem but not the packed bit stream problem. the bruv says it plays everything the finest - packed or unpacked

    I bought a slot loading philips 5100. Works with all the DivX's I have. Its was 89 but I though it might survive the kids better since its slot loading. Whereas the the trays seem to break very easy for other peole.

    Malpin had the goodman last time, i using the DVP as my main player.

    Getting a Aldi one for the kids this week.

    Got one of these puppies today. It's a Tevion QS808. Looks nice enough and has played the few divx & xvid files I've thrown at it with no problems. Nothing on the web as yet regarding multiregion hacks or firmware. Happy nuff so far. :)

    I've spent the morning looking for a Tevion site with manuals/firmware downloads and can't find anything. Why is that? What's the relationship between Medion and Tevion?

    Anyhoo, has anyone confirmed whether it's multi region or not? Anyone find a firmware for it?

    as far as i know aldi are advertising it as multi region so its a safe bet your on the button. also the tevion might not have a problem with packed bitstream so you wont need firmware.

    I think the adli UK site listed it as multiregion

    Picked up one of these today but when I tried it out none of the front panel buttons worked, it worked fine with the remote and played anything i put in it divx, xvid dvd etc no problem. after a while the picture started flickering and jumping, so I returned it but there were none left to exchange for so I just got my money back. Also there is a symbol on the back that says it is region 2 I didn't have a region 1 dvd to try so can't confirm if it is indeed multi region.
    Anyone know if there are any left in any of the stores I wouldn't mind getting one that works properly.

    It is multiregional. I've checked it on DVD R5. Found if you open tray and type "8888" it will show region code 9, which is multizone. You can select any other zone.
    Didn't find anything about firmware. Have an idea to call service center and ask on some bug which found in dvd player and try to get any FW updates.

    Also have some bad news and some good news. Will start from bad. http://www.dvdboard.de/forum/showthread.php?threadid=87582
    now is good. have few disk wich has a problem on lidl's player on MTK on both movies picture was not smooth and on one is completelly hangs but sound is good. All disk play ok on this player.

    Also downloaded divx test cd with different divx. will test player and tell you.

    Thanks for that info Deesy. Much appreciated.
    More than welcome.
    I have some problems with this player. I does not play sound on quite few divx movies. Have some movies where whole movie does not play. No video (divx5, hangs). no audio (mp3, 48khz).
    What is a "unconditional refund period" in aldi? Will try to contact customer support on monday and will return it if no luck.

    read the site and i think this firmware update disables the card reader. so think ill wait for the full version to come out. maybe that FW update will support the card reader - but great to see the bitstream prob sorted out. this player seems to be the divx player of choice for all the tweakers/modders/developers on the go at the mo. great to see such a good support for the player. it'll be making the tea next

    dunno if theres any left in athlone but if youve no joy finding one - lidl doing one on 28th. its 99 yo yos but its basically the very same as the one we mentioned elearier - the silvercrest one - with the card reader - only its a slimed down version - nice neat little thing thats a little bigger than a discman.

    This player (aldi one as this thread had got a little off the aldi topic of late) does play xvid but I finding very jumpy. Also, in certain cases, the player will jump ahead to the next xvid on the disk for no reason. Has anyone figured out what player this originally is and if there is a fireware fix for it (the adli one NOT the Lidi one)

    Cheers

    Hi I bought this dvd player, it plays some divxs fine, then others there is either no sound or it says cannot play file - do I have to re-encode the file or is there any way to solve this??

    You could try a proggie called 'mpeg4 modifier' to see if this will fix the broken files. Also there is a program called gspot which will identify what codecs are required to play back divx/xvid files, perhaps some of these are not supported by the player.
