A discount scheme for ISDN customers?

Got a call yesterday from eircom
There's a new discount scheme for isdn - at-home customers, they're sending the details but I think it works out as removing the cost difference between two pstn and hi-speed about £7.

Anyone else heard of this?

Got a call yesterday from Eircom, heres the deal

Pay £1.58 a month and get £7.88 worth of off-peak calls

So for a 2 month bill, thats £3.16 for about 26 hours online off-peak smile.gif

This is for isdn only

The bloke on the phone signed me up straight away and it will be on my next bill

Not great but better that a kick in the balls

LOL. Perfect for them methinks.

Sounds like a decent scheme though. Anything to keep the bills down. I've a feeling there'll be a lot of this soon as they try to keep folks on ISDN to allow more rollout time for DSL now that it finally seems to be starting. Those already on ISDN are more likey to be early adopters.

Slightly off topic:
On top of being charged at double call rates - Do you have to shell out 145.00 quid to use both ISDN channels?

If so, I think Eircom should revisit their discount schemes. (double taxation anyone?)

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,162 ✭✭✭_CreeD_

No, you pay the one installation fee (99) and rent for both lines. Usage is then just down to double call charges.

_Creed_:

Understand. Does that mean that I can use both ISDN channels on Eircom.net's "Free" service, or must I pay an additional 145.00 quid for the privilege(?)? smile.gif

Last time I looked the Eircon.net free service didn't support dual-channel ISDN.

AFAIK, OceanFree support dual channel ISDN.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,162 ✭✭✭_CreeD_

Oops. sry Straker. Yeah if you want 128k with Eircom.net you need to be a subscriber - and the damn thing rarely works. It usually takes me ~6/7 redials to get it to hold the 2nd connection.

• Closed Accounts Posts: 73 ✭✭DemonBaby

OceanFree do indeed support dual 'free' ISDN.
But dont tell everyone..I dont want them to pull the plug. smile.gif
I got the phonecall a few days ago too.
But once DSL is about ISDN is going out that window as fast as a fast thing.
Another good thing about Dual ISDN is setting up another PC on the other Channel.
You then get 2 PC's with a nice low ping.
If you use 2 channels on one PC you get very little improvement in your online gaming ping.
Good for D/l'ing stuff though.

Creed I had the same problem when I first started using ISDN on my subscription account. (a few days ago)
Basically what you have to do is, use the second channel (channel 1) in my case (if you have an eicon diva) and list the first channel (channel 0) the multilink. It only takes about 2 seconds to connect..

Another thing I would like to know is, when you dialup using both channels, and the second channel suspends itself (which it ALWAYS does when you're not downloading) are you still charged for both calls ?

What is now was once only imagined.

I'm sticking with high speed, at least for the moment, as the co techie hero tells me that while dsl will let you d/ld at amazing speeds, I won't be able to access the co lan, and I won't be able to transfer data point to point. Is 500k all that much faster than 128k for d/loading music and games?

And cut me some slack, I'm new.

Everyone (not just ISDN) can use a 'call a friend' type scheme for your 5 most frequently dilled number to get 10% discount with Eircom. Not sure what its called but you should find it on www.eircom.ie

Too many freaks, not enough circuses.

AFAIR, I tried to sign up online for this a while ago but I was already on some other scheme... eircom options I think... and I was called back to say that you can only have 1 scheme in place at a time... so already being on options, I couldn't sign up for the circle of friends thingy...
or something...™

One thing to consider is setting up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) over the internet for communication with the company lan. This would assume that the company also has a high speed network. Point to point data transfer would be out except via 56K modem but I think, if a VPN could be arranged there would be a net gain.

Well, you'll have to, at least for the moment. What are you gonna do, downgrade? smile.gif
the co techie hero tells me that ... I won't be able to access the co lan

I'm curious about that - why not?
Is 500k all that much faster than 128k for d/loading music and games?

Well, do the math, it'll be four times faster. smile.gif

Actually, it will and it won't, because just like any connection it'll depend on network connectivity and the connection on the other end, etc. But you should average out a hell of a lot better than 128k. Also, you'll be paying a flat monthly rental fee for the line and bandwidth, and not two lines + the cost of two calls...

No you sap you are wrong
the circle of friends cant be used on internet numbers or numbers already discounted (1891 numbers)a
also it can't be used with normal dialups on isdn

What is now was once only imagined.

Re Circle of friends thingy

There are two things, first if your bill is anymore than £15 a month you can get eircom options - I'm on options 50 and I get 350 mins of internet free every month
If your bill is lower you get 10% off the internet calls - including 1891 - and I just got that confirmed by some guy called Ben.
I havent worked out if 10% off all my calls is better than 350 free minutes, but anyway "Ben" tells me that I cant have circle of fiends and the high speed discount but i can have it with options.
If you can manage the navigation the info is on eircom.ie

Re accessing the Lan
I'm not sure why i won't be able to - something about DSL being about internet protocol rather than allowing point to point.

Stephen/Demonbaby:

Thanks for the Oceanfree 128K tip. Just saved me 145.00 quid... which I've drunk celebrating.

Re. "Circle of Friends", & Repli's reply:

Where are you getting your information from? I've always been able to put my internet phone # on "Circle of Friend" (ISDN and modem).

You mentioned that you wanted to keep ISDN for "point to point" data communication. I took this to mean that you might want to send a large data file from your home to a company by dialling that companies number over ISDN and transmitting it over the ISDN circuit.

ADSL does not permit this sort of communication. It is limited to digital communication between your home and the local exchange. However much higher throughput is possible and by connecting the exchange up directly to the internet you have a much better solution for Internet access than ISDN. ISDN is wasted in this situation.

ISDN is both a means of transmitting data over a phone line and also an exchange technology. You can send information anywhere in the country at a guaranteed 64K (or 128K) purely through the digital telephone network. This is what I assumed you meant by "point to point" and it is what you lose with ADSL.

On the other hand, since the data rate is so high, you can set up a VPN with yourself, other teleworkers and the office lan over the internet. Although the data rate is not guaranteed, it is likely to be higher than ISDN even at the worst of times. Internationally, ADSL is flat-rate which means that you could have a more or less seemless connection to your office from home. This, however, depends on the office having a decent "always on" internet connection as well.

Of course, if you have ADSL, you can still use an ordinary modem for point to point communication with another company.

For this free time, did you contact Eircom.net or normal Eircom?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 270 ✭✭Leverz

Who here has been able to take advantage of this scheme? Who did they contact? eircon.net or run of the mill eircon? (The n aint a typo) Do they have the name for this discount scheme?

Yes it's called circle of friends and you ring normal eircom to activate it not eircom.net

utv net clam to be interested in flat rate single channel isdn, maybe when we see how llu goes they may get going,

after reading all your posts, i have to wonder what made esat think they would have a flat rate wholesale system when they did

I am not talking about circle of friends, but this pay for so many hours free, I'm on Circle of friends already. As for UTV Internet, they are not offering flat rate yet. So whats the point in repeating something that has been stated on these boards over and over again for the last 6 months.
