Callely launches new assessible bus services on No. 79 Route
    13 July 2005

A further Dublin Bus Route is fully converted to Low-Floor Bus Operation

Callely launches new accessible bus services on No. 79 Route

Speaking today (Wednesday, 13 July 2005) at the launch of new accessible bus services on the No. 79 Dublin Bus Route, Minister Callely said that "since the year 2000 all major refurbishment projects at bus and rail stations, together with purchases of trains or buses take account of the needs of mobility impaired customers. In pursuing this policy, all new buses purchased for the services of Dublin Bus are now low-floor and wheelchair accessible.

Following recent deliveries, the company currently has around 500 such buses, which represent about 47% of the fleet. The company expect to take delivery of approximately 50 further buses in the coming months following which low-floor buses will constitute over 50% of the Dublin Bus fleet."

The Minister went on to say that "the new low-floor buses are being introduced into service on a route by route basis to provide consistency of service for people with mobility and sensory impairments. Up to now Dublin Bus has fully converted 50 routes to low-floor bus operation and as of today the No. 79 Route will be amongst those served by low-floor buses. The decision to convert this route was taken by Dublin Bus following consultation with members of the local community and is further evidence of Dublin Bus's commitment to providing transport for all, including people with mobility and sensory impairments. Dublin Bus expect to convert a further six routes to low-floor bus operation by end 2005".

In addition, the Minister pointed out that Dublin Bus is working with Dublin City Council to upgrade bus stops to complement the operation of the low-floor buses.
