Com Port in Use?

Hi, I have a device that uses the com port on my PC but I can't get it to be seen? Everytime I go to use the com port with the supplied software I get the warning "operation valid only when the port is open". I guess that means it is already in use or or needs to be opened. ANy Ideas how to do this or what the possible…

I guess that means it is already in use or or needs to be opened. ANy Ideas how to do this or what the possible problem is? I can't see how the port is in use but somebody said the soundcard can be seen to be using the port when it isn't really?
