Pedals and Prague

I'm heading away to prague next week and was thinking of picking up some pedals seeing as i haven't got any, but i just have a few questions.

    1. I'd like to build a board if possible and have no clue how to do this, the pedals i'm looking at, at the moment are,

    Boss TU2
    Boss MT2
    Boss DS1

i'm guessing the plugs will have to be changed but i'm sure i can pick them up in any of the dublin guitar shops.

I was looking at Boss' bcb-60 which is what i'd be looking to do but knowing the world of guitars the easier they make it for you the harder the hit in the pocket.

    2. so what i was thinking would it be better to buy the pedals over there (anyone have any suggestions of any good shops over there, if any) and then buy the power supply over here, i'd also like to leave this open to some upgradabilty with maybe in the future getting some sort of wah and maybe some other pedals.

    3. what exactly will i need on top of the pedals to get them working in synch,

i'm thinking all i need are

    the pedals themselves.
them little daisy chain leads to connect the pedals
    the power supply
    the plug

    4. does the power supply have to go into each pedal or can it go into one and then that pedal powers the rest of them?

    5. i'd also like to get a footswitch for my peavey rage158 to change from clean to distortion will any footswitch do or does it have to be a peavey?

sorry about the long post and all the questions about pedals and such.

    1. Plugs won't have to be changed. They should be standard Boss plugs.

    2. It depends on what voltage is used in Prague. If it's 220V, it could just be a case of chaining the two pin plug to a three pin.

    3. Sounds right.

    4. Each pedal. If you get a daisy chain, one plug goes into the power supply, the other's go to each pedal.

    5. Should be a standard pedal.

so if i read this right i will only need one plug to power the whole set of pedals?

i'll make sure of the voltages over there, if they are 220v i'll buy them off thomann or somewhere in england.

is it correct in saying that if i put the power into the tuner that pedal can power the rest of them?

Yes, the TU-2 has a power out socket on it. Plug the wall wart into the TU-2, plug the daisy chain into the TU-2 then into your other pedals and you should be set. Make sure you check your psu's current rating though.

Are they going to be cheaper in Prague?

    pedalpower.jpg

thats how i power mine, jus with one Boss adapter and the help of the Tu tuner, its a really handy lil pedal to have,

+ wudnt u just need to change from a 2 pin to a 3 pin plug? or could u just get the adapter over here, the pedals wud be the same..... wudnt they?

u can just get ur own pedalboard like a lil case, cause u never know what pedals u might end up having on the board, i got a pedalboard of thomann for exactly 100 it was a "rockcase" pedalboard... its cool

and if i was to recomend a pedal it wuld be a boss Ps-5 super shifter!

Keep an eye out for the rare Boss pedals if you wander into any second hand shops!!

ok guys thanks for the responses, i just thought that they may be cheaper over there than what the are in the shops here and that they might be on par with the prices on the net.

masterofsolos do you have a list of which boss pedals are rare as i'll buy them if i see any.

i have them written down, when you're talking rare do you mean rare as in worth a good bit of money or rare as in they make excellant sound?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,013 ✭✭✭SirLemonhead

Stuff like the Spectrum is fairy useless(but can be sold on ebay for over 200 euros on ebay :D ) but the other ones sound cool. The Analog delays are meant to be fantastic and so are the Dimension pedals.

Oh, I forgot one, the PN-2 Tremolo/Pan pedal.

Some are worth more than others :D

Really? what is this ebay you speak of?

If you pick them up in a second hand shop where they aren't entirely sure of the true value, you can get great deals :D

i think he means rare as in fantastic pedals that are just hard to come by or discontinued

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,013 ✭✭✭SirLemonhead

Yep quite a few of those never really appear on ebay. I've yet to actually see a Spectrum. Most of them were out of production over 20 years ago.

I was very tempted and nearly went for the BCB-60 a while ago but luckily i snapped out of it. First of all, it will only accommodate Boss pedals and chances are you won't be using Boss exclusively. Sure, it looks awesome and has an inbuilt power-supply, but you can get an excellent power supply like this Godlyke and build your own board for a fraction of the price.

There are plenty of DYI guides out there on google for constructing your own boards and chances are that it would probably be a better and more flexible board than the BCB-60.

yeh i was thinking about that at least if i DIY it i can use other pedals too, i guess you can buy power supplies in the shops in town, i'd rather i bought one in ireland (i'll be using the boss adapter through the tuner at first) as to ensure it works and if anything goes wrong i can easily take it back.

The boss adapter through the TU-2 should do the job.

If you're buying regular adapters, at least buy good ones, avoid crap from Argos and the like because you might experience more hum than necessary.

Think about investing in a power brick too, if you're into many effects.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

ohh yeh i wouldn't go near argos for anything power related or guitar related for that matter... but i'll make sure i get a decent adapter and for the time being (couple of months) i only see myself having the three pedals that i stated above.

Well, then you shouldnt be in a hurry ;)

The TU-2 will do the job for your three pedals.

Btw, Dunlop also make those power bricks but they're a bit more expensive than voodoo, i think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,013 ✭✭✭SirLemonhead

Yep get a good regulated power supply, like the Boss. The unregulated ones will give you hum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

Afaik, most of the adapters you buy today are regulated.

There are few old ones, like the Boss ACA, which are unregulated, but then effect pedals that were manufactured around that time have a basic regulatory circuit inside already.
