Classic Board wargames

In the early days Games Workshop released some truly excellent board games. One somple war game was Warlords (I think thats what it was called) a three player game. Later that was followed by "Blood Royal" which was truely excellent and I actually still have it.

    Has anyone ever played these?

Avalon Hill, many of whose games I have owned has been bought out by Hasbro (maker of Risk). They used to have a whole swath of games, all war based crossing genres. But allas after about 18 years in the game they have gone by the wayside.

I havent heard of either of those games, but they remind me of the Games Workshop/MB game Space Cruade. THAT GAME ROCKED! It was very easy to get the hang of (i sucked at it though) Up to 4 players and overall a great laugh. Pity its out of production tho frown.gif

Space Crusade (though enjoyable) was a game that was developed from the sysytem the GW developed late on in their career and hence was flawed. Nearly every game they have done since has had the same dice system and rule basis which is completly wrong if you are to bring origional material to the market.

If anyone thinks thay are a good (or great) Space crusade or space hulk player I advise you chalange lolth (Literature boards mod) because he is the Master :-)

Not with models and such, no. Two (or four with the expansion pack thing) blocks, one on each board, mobilising the various Mobs, Fatties, Citi-Def squads and looting the block Armouries and Hardware Stores for weapons, the loser is whoever block is most damaged at the end so the emphasis is on major violence smile.gif

Spray cans, flamethrowers, missile launchers, the lot, until the Judges come in and break it up at the end. Great fun, easily learned, and doesn't last more than three hours tops - ideal smile.gif

Yeh, Block wars was based on a story from Judge Dredd (in 2000ad for those heathens among us... back in the days of Ace Trucking and Co. for those who are slightly less heathen and possibly up to the Pagan bracket).

Never played the board game though.

Space crusade... hmmm fun smile.gif There was one mission where you had to open the airlock at teh far end of the map and have a race against the expanding vacuum.. LoL! I always planted a few guys along the way back to slow down everyone else and let the vacuum catch them smile.gif

Space Hulk, was a good laugh as well, setting up terminators in a crossfire smile.gif My record was over 500 stealers without losing a single marine. we gave up through boredom..

Blood royale was great but *the best* ever was Warrior Knights! Bidding for mercenaries and sending off trade ships while butchering your pals... hmmmmm, nostalgia.<drool>

Anyone remember the Middle Earth war game? came on a big 8 or 9 piece jigsaw board? that was a laugh.

Used to play risk on paper and pencil RPG maps as well. (anyone familiar with Greyhawk will know that hte map you get in that is *perfect* for a risk variant...

    KING MAKER

This may be one for the pureists out there but when I was in London recently I was looking for "KingMaker", a true classic wargame based in the war of the Roses.

Excellent political system for a multi player game. Bot it and the combat system that required a great deal of strategy. Sadly it is out of production after many happy years.

www.theunderdogs.org seems to be down atm, but they have the PC version of Kingmaker on there.

I downloaded that file but could never get it to work.
It's small enough. If anyone wants it (and thinks they can get it working), drop me a mail at lolth@ireland.com and I'll send it on.. or send a URL for it.

KingMaker: I downloaded it and got it to work, but the key was missing as a few rounds into it the protection kicks in and asks you to quote from the manual.

Its not a great interpretation of the game either so I don't think its worth downloading and printng the manual.
