"uek" tag

What the hell does this mean/represent?

One day, walking home from Croke Park with my GF, we must have seen this "tagged" on about 30 seperate occasions, between Croke Park and the Phoenix Park.

Then today, I am going out to Lexlip and on the slope underneath one of the bridges beside the motorway a big "UEK" was sprayed there.

So clearly this thing is pretty wide spread, still I have no idea as to what it stands for. (and it is not some sort of renewable energy company , or hydro kinetics corpo, before you google :D). Could just be some guys "tag" but I have seen it around a LOT.

    Any ideas?

    Fixed. :o

Excellent thanks. My soul is at rest now.

Under educated and under talented (judging by the tags I have seen, one of which was semi-artistic) is right.

Do you know that from experience?
UEK is a crew and the main guy in that crew is actually a solicitor who happens to drive a pretty nice X5. Kind of contradicts your no job idea. Lose some of the ignorance dude.

How could a solicitor be a tagger... I dunno, strange world.

Anyway, thanks for clearing it all up. The other thread in the dublin forum gave some extra info too , thanks.

Most graffiti writers don't fit the stereotype you have in your mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

i for one know at least 2 housewives in their mid 60's that do a pretty mean tag...

no, honestly.. I'm talking out my ass... I'd pay good money to see a solicitor hop out of his X5, dressed in an Italian suit and whip a can of spray paint out of his briefcase. I'd be inconsolable with laughter for a good.. ohh 3 minutes anyway.

Most *good* graffiti artists are not as stereotypical.
The ones doing the UEK tags I have seen, more than likely do fit into this stereotype.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,217 ✭✭✭FX Meister

Well that's where you would be wrong. You don't know what kind of pieces UEK do because you judge them by tags. They have done some really nice legal pieces and have pushed a more european style into graff here in Ireland.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

    Got some pics?
What I know of them is that they spray these lame tags all over the place, with no actual "artwork" for the most part. Reminds me of somthing a 12 year old might write on his copy "I rule" etc....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,217 ✭✭✭FX Meister

with no actual "artwork" for the most part.

You can apply the same to a lot of Damien Hirst's work or even more so for Martin Creed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Graffiti is an artform, you should be as surprised that a solicitor writes poetry as you would be if they did graffiti. Ok, the vast vast majority of graffiti is terrible but there are some real nice pieces (example). The wall is their canvas. Anyway... The wall is in a sense litter itself.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,217 ✭✭✭FX Meister

Nice example. And one of those writers from that particular wall used to have tags all over London and still has tons there. Does that make his art useless? It's all part of what he is in the end.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

Oh don't get me wrong, I think graffiti is amazing, and is just as artistic as any other art form. This is the crap I am talking about though.... (taken from other thread)

    7202073_43b3924964.jpg?v=0
    7201828_1e7b85b8f2.jpg?v=0

Just some grubby scribblings on a wall, nothing like the Sin City masterpiece you posted.
Hardly inspiring, and in the last one it seems UEK has sprayed over another persons work.

Anyway, I now know what UEK is etc.... my question is answered.

    Thanks to all that helped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭Dathai

Actually, UEK was under that throw up,MILK did a throw up over it (per usual it seems now with MILK), and that first pic is a bomb, simple style.
UEK is a tag, quite a well thought out one also. The artists that are in UEK are some of the finest graff artists I have seen in Ireland.
If you have a problem with the tag, I suggest you take it up with the next fella you see tag UEK.

Well, since they ain't stereotypes, I guess this was not ment in a "take it up with them and they will show you thier size 12s" kind of way eh?

Anyway, your missing my point. Thanks for all the help, my problem has been solved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

This thread was the first time I heard of UEK but it may be catching on in them areas and maybe little 12 year olds are actually just tagging it without knowing anything about it. I remember my friend came up with "Zinc", it was done mostly in the Bray area, some were ok, but then you'd see it written everywhere and he only said he only ever did a few of them. I've seen some of his art and it's very good and his bedroom walls are supposidly one big tag

All i can say is if hes a solicitor, then he should know better. Am i supposed to be impressed and think 'wow! Grafitto 'bombing' tagging is so cool, even solicitors do it! Now i really love all those crappy scrawls all over the city! Hooray for vandalism!'
Sure, that sin city piece is excellent, but the majority of the 'uek' tags are sh!tty little scribbles, absolutely fu*cking everywhere. Are they art? no. Are they pointless crap thats pretty much tantamount to vandalism? Yes.
If these people want to write all over something, i suggest they start with thier own property, instead of other peoples. How woul you like it is someone called up to your house, sprayed sh!t all over it and said 'sorry, but its actually art, so im allowed to do it.'.

i think someone doesn't understand exactly what a tag is. its supposed to be basically a simple scribble that someone can just lash onto a wall in double-quick time. i think the uek tag is very nice actually and alot of the big pieces that they've done are deadly, especially on the dart. "gone" i think is one of them. but what about the ubiquitous "grift"? i was really impressed when i first began to see the sheer coverage of the city with grift tags. i certainly don't think these tags are ugly. i wouldn't want one on my house but i do like seeing them off the dart or on the street.

I wonder if the solicitor has tagged the walls of his home / office / building. Or is it only public / other people's property?

Call graffiti art all you like, but if it's where it shouldn't be it's still vandalism. Don't mind popping over to the tate and having a look at tracy emin's bed, but that doesn't mean I want her coming into my house and messing up my bed.

    I don't get you

I was walking home with my friend the other night and there was a guy walking ahead of us and on every white wall he would write something in a black perm marker. It was shoite. I don't put this in the same category as the likes of the sin city wall. Any the Sin City wall looks like it's on a really run down building. Allot of walls are grey/brown/red and don't look too pleasing and can be viewed as depressing to allot of people. I'd much prefer to see that art on a wall than just a plain brown run down wall with no life.

Oh, I'm against fox and any other kind of hunting for sport.

Anytime I see anyone spray painting something, they get the threat of a hiding, and not yet has one taken up the challenge. So my opinion is that they are pussies.

Go buy a canvas and do some real art ya sap, or spray your own bleedin wall.

    Bravo. Someone with sense.

"oh oh - these taggers don't fit your stereotypes - oh oh - they're respectable people". Oh? Here's a stereotype you can cram me into: Normal people who don't give two sh!ts. I don't want to see your art - or crap, as it should be known - while I'm walking around the city. Why doesn't the solicitor paint up his own office with these 'tags' of his? I honestly can't believe that grown adults are trying to justify what is, essentially, vandalism. Unreal.

i want all "taggers" on this forum to give me their addresses so i can write "tagging is gay" is ten foot high very artistic letters on the wall of their houses. see how they like their property being devalued by a tosser.

i suggest this to an idiot i know that tags whenever i see him doing it. all he can come back with is "you dont understand man" over and over again. in fact i understand perfectly. spraying paint on someone elses property is no better than taking a baseball bat to their car. its criminal damage full stop. after i suggest tagging his house, he usually says he'll burn my house down if i do. hmm, if i do to him what he does to hundreds of ppl he'll burn my house down????????

if i beat up someones lexus in such a way that i think it looks good does that make it "art"? does that entitle me to destroy their property?

if a grafitti artist has permisson to do a piece im all for it but spraying paint on other peoples property for a thrill or the admiriation of fellow f*ckwits or whatever limp dicked reason you all have just makes you an idiot.

[edit]: if you insist on tagging, do it on the back wall of your own house where it wont disturb the people who respect the property rights of others. but then that just wouldn't be any fun would it
