Line rental Q

Your line rental is being paid as part of the household benefits package to Eircom at €24.18 PM, but BT line rental is only €10 PM. I'm told if you change over to BT the government will still pay BT €24.18 a month.

Is this true?...and if so why has no one twigged this and changed over?

They have 'twigged' in their usual confused manner , the problem is that BT have not properly briefed their droids who give very inconsistent answers on the phone but whats new there :( .

Seeing as some 20% of all the lines in the state are changeable over they should brief the droids and announce pensioner variants of ALL their Bundles...taking the subvention into account in advance .

BT should uppy and linky a straightforwad printable form where everything is explained clearly and let the pensioners at it .

Q - why dosen't the governement force, um "encourage" people to switch to a cheaper service provider?

Surely they'd save a fortune here by having people switch to the €10 line rental, this may also force Eircom to drop the price of their line rental if they have people who get the line rental paid by the gov. to switch.

The drop in line rental has only recently emerged as an issue - in fairness it is probably unreasonable to expect the Govt to set up a section to monitor line rental charges and start recommending specific Companies products to pensioners. this would probably raise all sorts of hackles then on the part of companies not being recommended.

Another question on this broad topic. Presumably as Smart are offering free line rental there is no way of offsetting the line rental entitlement of a pensioner against the monthly 35 euro charge?

Not sure about Smart, i understand that switching to BT means that you're paying €20 incl. VAT for line rental (two monthly) as opposed to €48 incl. VAT to Eircom.

Since the Gov. shell out €48 regardless to BT it makes sense to switch, consider broadband. With the new offer it's €100 per two monthly bill for the 2MB package incl. line rental. The Gov. pay BT €48 for line rental....you pay €52...yay!!

Garfield has stated previously, i believe, that the government subvention will be subtracted from the amount you pay Smart.
