What's the problem? It seems to me he's saying he will pay through Paypal like anyone else? Why assume he is a scammer?

they pay through paypal, you ship the item, they then claim that it never arrived and get paypal to refund them the money. Voila you now have no money and no item!

if you force them to pay for postage insurance and get a proof of postage surely they can not do anything and any money they try and claim back would be paid through insurance.

Ok fair enough. Sounds a bit prejudice to me but you can't be too careful on ebay. Is this your PSP you're selling?

just on the paypal chargeback thing....I had someone that never sent an item (was only a small amount for a dvd) and I did a paypal chargeback...paypal found in my favour but said that there were no funds in the sellers paypal account so tough!

It probably does seem a little dodgy especially if the buyer in the OP's case only registered today but if you clear the paypal funds out and then send are you not a little more protected from the risk of a chargeback...

EDIT/ Just read the 1st email sent by the Nigerian fiancee....seems majorly dodgy and best avoided :D

I always paste a paragraph of conditions and if the item is likely to attract weirdos I put the line "Bidders must have >5 trades and 100% positive feedback" I restrict the sale to Eu and only accept Paypal. Ebay isn't for everyone or everything - if you are so worried, why not just sell it locally - whats wrong with the Buy&Sell? And as for Nigerians, you can get scammed selling apples to Kilkennymen - always be careful.

just put in a note saying approved bidders only, or something along the lines of anyone with less than 10 positive feedback needs to conact you before bidding.

only ship to europe, etc etc.

look at what other people are doing to combat this and do the same.

I got a similar email today ... here's a link to an earlier post.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=3276975#post3276975

What do you think? I have a bad gut feeling about it...

    On a seperate EBAY note,

I bought an item recently which came to 3 English pounds.

Postage to "United Kingdom" was deemed 9 pounds,

I assumed this would be the cost for me, but the seller quotes THIRY FIVE pounds for shipping to Ireland!!

This is far too much to bother with the item to be fair...

So i contact the seller to say i will pay for the item no problem, but not the shipping, and therefore they can just relist the item. So basically they are making an extra 3 pounds on the item once they sell it again.

    HOWEVER,

They reply saying that they wont do this and to pay up in the next ten days.

Surely they must be taking a fair slice of this ridiculous 35 Pounds shipping for themselves?

Otherwise why not accept my compromise?

    What's the item?

I'm guessing for 3 quid that it can't be too big?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,420 ✭✭✭WellyJ

Its a toy space ship set that i used to have the twin of as a kid,

wanted to get it for my young nephew, Its from the 80's so thats why the price is so low, it is pretty big and im guessing shipping would be expensive.

    But not 35 pounds expensive

On the note of this topic, Paypal cannot take the money out of your account if the buyer claims it was not received, if the buyer didn't opt for postal insurance then its his tough sh!t, if he did then the money has to be claimed back from the postal service...

On the note of the shipping, if you did not request a quote first before winning the auction then I'm afraid there's nothing you can do. Don't pay, all he can do is give you a bad feedback and report you as not completing the transaction, ebay will do nothing unless you do this frequently...

I work for eBay :o you can send this in via the web portals, and submit it to the guys in Fraud, they will happily suspend his ass!!
