    Hey guys..
I downloaded slackware 8 and I am trying to put it on CD to boot from it.. I am using nero and I just put all the files onto the CD.. but it doesnt seem to be bootable .. when i set the bios to boot from cd it says "invalid media type" or something like that.
Is there any way to make the CD or is there a file you can put on a floppy disk and run setup from there?
    Thanks

    try RTFM.

and when u have done that look in the menu in nero for making a bootable cd. I presume when you said u just copied the files to cd, that implies you didnt download the bootable iso image from a local mirror.

u can also use rawrite (should be in the distro somewhere) to write a kernel image to a floppy. ull need to disks a kernel disk and some kinda setup disk. both are there and there is a fúcking manual to read ya lazy git. smile.gif

    read it!!!

the files are not bootable im afraid to tell you. you must know nothing about bootable cds and cd images if you think copying files to a cd will make it bootable.

For a cd to boot on your system it needs to have a hidden bootable partition on it. there is a FAQ and a howto to do this, hell nero will even doo it for you ffs.

i was gona paste in some links to Manuals and FAQ's and HOWTO's but im afraid i dont feel very helpful, and plus you obviously havent even bothered to look.

when you open up nero, the wizard should pop up
close hat and another box comes up
you'll be able to make a bootable cd from those options.

ipconfig is about the closest equivalent. the net command also provides some useful stuff as well

to make a bootable cd from the files you downloaded you use the boot floppy image, should be floppy.bin or boot.bin or somthing like that, it should have come with the files you got, i know you can do this with cdrecord which is a burner for linux but seeing as do dont have linux yet i geuss nero will do it look for an option to supply a file to make it bootable.

do a search on the net for el torito, its the soec for bootable cds

Ok it's installed, there was a kernel boot file on the ftp, my mistake, thanks all who helped, I haven't got X configured properly yet.. but i'll fix it when I have time..
One last thing.. I have windows on a 20gig HD and slackware on a 13gb HD, i was wondering is there any way to access the files on the windows HD from slackware?

(they are both connected to the mobo, IDE-0 and IDE-1) in that order

yah there is of course RTFM!

    and then mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/windowscrud -t vfat

    edit:

i do wish you would look in /usr/doc/Linux-HOWTO b4 you come here asking very silly questions like that. all the info you need is on your machine now, so just go look.

theres no point in asking every question you have here when there is always a faster way to find out.

    edit no 2:

c-in as how imm bored, i would like to point out that in 6 months of using boards.ie i have now only reached 100 posts and im a "crazy poster" now

tbh i wouldn't know where to look for linux docs on mounting HDs and i don't think you should be calling me questions silly and then replying that is a bit stupid.
AND i didnt specifically ask YOU anyway

look robert, i am merely trying to help by maybe advising you to go look. a simple question on google like "how do i mount my windows partition in linux?" would get you several pages linked to docs for such infomation. also as you can see i told you where on your machine that you could find the info

    also just type "man mount"
can i alos point out that the use of uppercase txt is very childish. come on you can do better.
